Tannenhausen combines a swimming lake with water sports, a megalithic tomb and cycling routes that run through the Aurich district. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Tannenhausen, these different attractions may shape your choice of destination: time by the water, archaeological history or cycling.

Swimming Lake and Activities

Tannenhausen Swimming Lake has a white bathing beach that slopes gently into the lake. The leisure and recreation area offers swimming, a wakeboarding facility with an aquapark, pedal boat and SUP rental, beach volleyball, a playground, beach chairs and a circular walking trail. The floating aquapark includes diving platforms up to 3.50 metres high, climbing towers, slides and a water trampoline. The NORTH BOUND Aurich Beach & Wake facility is about 650 metres long.

The lake’s designated dog bathing area has a gently sloping sandy beach, is fully fenced and can be reached via its own entrance. Bridleways are also part of the leisure area: numerous trails lead into the East Frisian countryside from the “Kleine Mücke” riding stables, located right by the swimming lake.

Megalithic Tomb and Memorial Site

The megalithic tomb on Am Hünengrab street is a roughly 5,000-year-old tomb from the Funnel Beaker culture. This early farming culture began around 4000 BC. The city of Aurich reconstructed the tomb in 2014, added information panels and opened it to the public. The reconstruction of the eastern of the two burial chambers can be viewed in the front section. In local parlance, the three original boulders are called “Butter, Bread and Cheese” or “Botter, Brood und Kääs”.

Another historical point of interest is the information panel at the Aurich-Tannenhausen war cemetery. It is bilingual and provides information about the prisoner-of-war camp in Tannenhausen, the situation of Soviet prisoners of war and the historical background.

Cycling Routes through Tannenhausen

Two named routes pass through the Aurich district for a cycling tour: the northern route of the Aurich circular tour is 42 kilometres long, and the “Ewiges Meer Route” cycling circuit is 32 kilometres long. The northern route is therefore ten kilometres longer; the “Ewiges Meer Route” is designated as a circular route. At the information points along the “Ewiges Meer Route”, you can learn about rare plant and animal species and the former way of life of the people who lived in the former raised bog landscape.

In the Wider Aurich Travel Destination

The wider Aurich travel destination adds local history and art to a visit to the area. The Historical Museum is located in the heart of Aurich’s old town, in the former princely chancellery, and presents Aurich’s history as a residence town. The nearby museum also displays a selection of finds and a model of the burial complex of the Tannenhausen megalithic tomb.

The late Gothic “Ihlower” altar, an Antwerp altarpiece, is located in St. Lambert’s Church. The Lukasgilde carved it between 1510 and 1515; in 1529, during the Reformation, it was brought to Aurich from Ihlow Monastery together with the organ. These art and history attractions offer a different focus from Tannenhausen’s swimming and cycling activities, broadening the perspective on the wider travel destination.
