When planning a visit to Südbrookmerland, there are several perspectives to explore: water activities at the Great Sea, cycling routes and cultural sites that tell the story of East Frisian working and settlement history. This lets you tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most, rather than trying to fit every experience into a single tour.

At the Great Sea: on the water and by bike

The Great Sea is East Frisia’s largest inland lake. Sailing and surfing are possible there. Motorboats are not permitted on the lake; instead, they travel on the many waterways around it. This distinction helps you choose an activity: the lake is the place for sailing and surfing, while motorboats travel on the surrounding waterways.

Visitors can start canoe or cycling tours at the paddle-and-pedal station at the Great Sea. One available combination tour links both forms of travel in a set order: first, the canoe tour follows a circular route along the Süderriede back to the Great Sea. A cycling tour along the 3-Seas Route follows. If you are planning this combination, check availability before you travel; the station’s offerings may vary.

Cycling routes planned your way

Cycling routes in Südbrookmerland run past fields and meadows, along East Frisian waterways, through villages and right beside the Great Sea. Cycling thus takes you through a variety of landscapes, although no single route needs to include all these sections. If you would like to plan your own route, you can use the numbered junction system and follow the signs from one junction to the next. This offers two approaches: a combination tour with a set itinerary, or using the numbered junction system to plan your own route. Check the signs locally if you plan to navigate using the junctions.

Church and museums: different perspectives

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wiegboldsbur houses a distinctive metal baptismal font: it is round, widens towards the top and is Gothic in style. Four figures of knights support the font, which is adorned with twelve images. These include eight apostles, as well as the baptism of Jesus and the crucifixion. The font’s distinctive shape, figures and images make it a cultural attraction in its own right.

The Dörpmuseum Münkeboe and the Moormuseum Moordorf focus on different subjects. The open-air Dörpmuseum brings together workshops, facilities, tools and machinery from the former working life of the village and its immediate surroundings. The living museum area also includes a fully operational grain windmill. Visitors can sample fresh bread from the stone oven; availability depends on museum operations.

The Moormuseum Moordorf, by contrast, focuses on the challenging 200-year development of an East Frisian moor colony and presents it in an original moorland landscape. Together, the two museums offer different perspectives: the former working life of a village in one, the history of a moor colony in the other. Those interested in local history can include these different subjects in their travel plans.

A pilgrimage route through Südbrookmerland

The 40-kilometre “Schola Dei” pilgrimage route follows an old pilgrimage path for much of its length. It runs from Ihlow through Südbrookmerland to Norden.

More nature experiences in the wider Aurich destination

In the wider Aurich destination, the Fehntjer Tief Nature Conservation Station is an out-of-school learning centre for environmental education, as well as a place for meetings and public outreach. The station works to preserve the natural and cultural landscape of Fehntjer Tief. In spring and summer, students and visitors can experience the plants and birdlife of the wet meadows on walks, by bike or on foot.

The station is housed in a listed Gulfhaus, a typical East Frisian farmhouse dating from 1843. The focus on the natural and cultural landscape and the historic building complement the cultural and landscape perspectives in the wider Aurich destination.
