Usseln offers a range of options to help you plan your trip: a themed trail focusing on milk and agriculture, hiking trails, protected areas and insights into local history. Each option has a different focus. You can decide whether you would rather make a themed route, a circular trail, nature or culture the focus of your stay.

Circular trails with different focuses

The 6 km Usseln Milk Discovery Trail is a family-friendly themed trail about milk and agriculture. Quizzes and hands-on activity stations accompany you along the route; the hay barn cinema shows films about agriculture. There is also a telescope station, a photo spot and a cow-pat trampoline. Places to stop for refreshments and take a break are also part of the trail, which ends with a visit to the Muhseumscafé at the Upländer Bauernmolkerei. The themed stations give this route a different character from a circular trail where the route itself is the main focus.

The U2 is a 3.6 km circular trail around Hoher Pön. Its connections are also relevant for planning: the approach and return from the Usseln Tourist Information follow the same route as the U1 or, in part, the Uplandsteig. The U1 circular trail starts and ends at the Usseln hiking car park at Sportstraße 7, 34508 Willingen, Usseln district. As parking availability and local regulations may change, it is advisable to check the situation before setting out.

Heathland and protected areas

The Kahle Pön area near Usseln has been designated a nature reserve since 1987. The Hochheide on Kahler Pön provides a habitat for rare native plant species whose populations are at risk. The protected heathland flora is therefore the main focus of this area.

The Osterkopf Nature Reserve lies east of Usseln. It includes montane dwarf-shrub heath, adjoining mountain meadows and Nardus grassland. The protected area is easily accessible from the Catholic church in Usseln via the Osterkopf circular trail. Kahle Pön and Osterkopf therefore offer descriptions of different landscapes: the Hochheide and its importance as a habitat in one area, and several named types of heathland and meadow in the other. You can explore these areas as separate nature themes without treating their respective features as identical.

Local history and seasonal outdoor pool

The Usseln Local History Museum offers insights across more than 250 m² into life, history and culture in the Waldecker Upland, as well as the nature and landscape of what is now Diemelsee Nature Park. Numerous exhibits illustrate everyday life in the past, hard work and the way people lived at the time. This adds a historical perspective on the region to the nature themes. The Kilianskirche Usseln is also associated with a traditional name: it is regarded as the mother church of the Upland.

The Usseln outdoor pool is another option for your stay, operating seasonally. Facilities include a 25 m water slide, diving towers at heights of 1 m and 3 m, and a separate baby pool with colorful play equipment. If a visit to the outdoor pool is part of your plans, check whether it will be open during your chosen dates.

Usseln and the wider region

For a longer hiking experience, the larger destination of Willingen (Upland) is a point of reference in its own right: the certified 66 km Uplandsteig circles the municipality of Willingen (Upland) and passes through all nine districts. This is on a different scale from the 3.6 km U2 circular trail. The regional context helps you distinguish the local circular trail from the longer hiking trail without treating them as equivalent activities.
