Swimming is possible in Kleinsee; Bömighausen also has a campsite right by the water. The hiking trails offer different highlights: from an easy circular trail with a detour to Kleinsee to a longer route to Grotenberg. This lets you include both water and exercise in your plans and choose a route based on its length and the scenery you’re interested in.

Circular trails with different highlights

The easy B1 circular trail is 3.10 kilometres long, follows the Uplandsteig, and includes a detour to Kleinsee. A shelter offers a place to rest. By comparison, B2 is longer at 7.37 kilometres and leads to Grotenberg. B1 therefore combines a shorter distance with an easy rating, while B2 focuses on a longer loop and the views from Grotenberg.

The Willingen–Bömighausen circular trail (B2) starts and ends at the Bömighausen hiking car park by the community centre. It partly follows the Uplandsteig. Along the way, you’ll find a panoramic viewpoint, an idyllic side valley of the Neerdarbach, and a Kneipp facility offering an opportunity for a refreshing, healthful break. The combination of a ridge trail, side valley, and Kneipp facility gives this loop a different character from the shorter B1.

B3 also offers its own distinctive scenery: it climbs to a former railway station. The return to Bömighausen passes through the varied landscape of a meadow valley. This adds a route to the two circular trails where the alternation between ascent and valley shapes the course.

Getting there and starting point

Bömighausen can be reached from Willingen railway station by bus or shared taxi (AST). Possible stops are Dorfstraße or Auf dem Burlande. Check the current timetable for your travel date before setting out. For B2, the Bömighausen hiking car park at the community centre is listed as the start and end point. This makes it easy to plan your journey around where you want to begin your hike.

Willingen (Upland) as a wider setting

The wider destination of Willingen (Upland) offers a broader hiking experience along the Uplandsteig: this certified quality hiking trail is 66 kilometres long, loops around the municipality, and passes through all nine districts. In Bömighausen, B1 follows the Uplandsteig and B2 follows it in part. This places the local circular trails alongside a route that loops around the municipality on a larger scale.

The wider destination of Willingen (Upland) also includes other notable attractions. The Skywalk stretches for 665 metres and hangs 100 metres above the Upland landscape. The Mühlenkopfschanze is a year-round attraction and leisure destination; its 25-metre-high ski jump tower has a viewpoint called “Adlerhorst” (Eagle’s Nest). The Hochheideturm on Ettelsberg is 62 metres high. Its observation platform is 875 metres above sea level and is considered the highest viewpoint in north-west Germany. An accessible lift for eight people leads to the observation platform.
