Hohenstein Castle stands above the wooded hills of the Lower Taunus in a scenic stretch of the Aar Valley. The keep is also accessible and offers views across the Aar Valley. Here, castle and countryside come together during a visit.

Visits from Easter to the End of September

The castle is open to visitors seasonally, from Easter to the end of September, with no admission charge. Guided explanations are offered during the opening season, including on Easter Saturday and the first Sunday of each month. If you are planning a visit for a specific day, please check the seasonal visiting arrangements in advance.

Culture in the Castle Courtyard

For the wider destination of Hohenstein, Hohenstein Castle is the most historically significant site and the municipality’s landmark. Every year, the castle courtyard provides the setting for the Taunusbühne Bad Schwalbach’s castle festival performances. The theatrical performances take place in June and July on the open-air stage in the castle’s inner courtyard; some seats are covered. The specific program may vary from year to year.

Limes Trails in the Wider Destination of Hohenstein

In the wider destination of Hohenstein, two circular Limes trails can be compared by their length and information boards. The 5 km Georgenthal Limes circular trail starts at the Hofgut Georgenthal car park and has nine information boards. The 5.5 km Hohenstein Limes circular trail leads to other visible Limes structures and has seven information boards. The two trails therefore differ both in length and in the number of information boards. Hofgut Georgenthal in Hohenstein is also home to the museum-based learning center for the Limes World Heritage Site. Traces of the Limes can be found in Hohenstein’s districts of Breithardt, Born, and Steckenroth.

More Trails and Seasonal Events in Hohenstein

The family yoga trail in Burg-Hohenstein offers a short 1.3 km loop and a longer 2.4 km loop; the starting point is the information board at the community hall. Children and adults can try yoga exercises at the 14 stations. The nature discovery trail is an interactive learning space with stations where visitors can take part in activities. It starts in Breithardt, 1.3 km from the sports field. A different scale is offered by the approximately 40 km horse-riding and circular hiking trail: it passes through Hohenstein’s landscapes and by cultural monuments such as the Limes and the castle.

The Aar Valley Cycle Path climbs steeply for a short stretch of up to 9% to Hohenstein-Born, then continues on flatter terrain through Hohenstein-Breithardt. A recurring event on AarstraĂźe (B 54) takes place on the last Sunday in May: the road is closed to motorized traffic for one day and is then reserved exclusively for cycling, scooters, and inline skating. The route also passes through Hohenstein; the date and program vary from year to year.
