Born can be explored through two distinctive features: a baroque half-timbered church and traces of the Limes. Hiking and cycling offer different ways to experience them. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on architectural and regional history or on activities along the routes.

Church and Limes in Born

The Baroque church in Born is the only Protestant half-timbered church in western Hesse. Its architectural style provides a tangible point of reference for the history of the village. Traces of the Limes can also be found in the Born area. Those interested in archaeological remains can choose between a circular route with information boards and the history of a single watchtower site.

At the site of the Limes watchtower Wp 3/4* near Hohenstein-Born, two ditches surrounded the hill on which the wooden watchtower stood. In the cleared area or the newly reforested area, the site can now only be identified by excavation pits; the actual tower mound is difficult to make out. Its limited visibility is part of the description of this site and distinguishes it from a trail equipped with information boards.

Hiking and Cycling

The Borner Runde is a hiking route; the sports field in Hohenstein-Born is a recommended starting point. The Hohenstein Limes Circular Route is described as a 5.5-kilometre loop with seven information boards. Its length and information boards provide specific reference points for planning. Check the route details locally before setting out.

The Aar Valley Cycle Path runs from the source to the mouth of the Aar. A notice published on 9 August 2023 describes its new route from Michelbach via the “Sonnenweg” to Holzhausen über Aar and Breithardt, then on to Born and Adolfseck, where it rejoins the original route. Check the current route before setting off. In the municipality’s 2023 description, the cycle path is characterised as safe, close to nature, full of experiences and family-friendly; some sections are also considered somewhat challenging. This means that a family-friendly overall description sits alongside more demanding sections, rather than the entire route receiving the same rating.

More Attractions in the Wider Hohenstein Destination

In the wider Hohenstein destination, Hohenstein Castle is the most historically significant site and the emblem of the municipality. Every year in June and July, the TaunusbĂĽhne stages theatre performances on the open-air stage in the castle courtyard; some seats are covered. The programme can vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your stay around a performance, check the dates for the relevant year.

Another Limes highlight is at Hofgut Georgenthal, home to the museum and interpretation centre for the World Heritage Limes. The 5-kilometre Georgenthal Limes Circular Route starts at the Hofgut car park and has nine information boards. This route and the Hohenstein Limes Circular Route differ in length, number of boards and stated starting point.

For a different kind of activity, the family yoga trail in Burg-Hohenstein offers a short 1.3-kilometre loop and a long 2.4-kilometre loop. It starts at the information board by the community hall; at 14 stations, children and adults can try yoga exercises. By contrast, the nature discovery trail starts in Breithardt. It is an interactive learning destination with stations where visitors can take part in activities; its starting point is 1.3 kilometres from the sports field in Breithardt. These details help you compare different focuses and loop lengths in the Hohenstein destination.

The time of year can also affect your plans: every year on the last Sunday in May, AarstraĂźe (B 54) is closed to motorised traffic for one day and reserved exclusively for cycling, scooters and inline skating. The route passes through Hohenstein; the exact date and programme vary from year to year.
