Three circular routes make Caldern an interesting destination for hiking: they differ in length and focus, ranging from 6.7 to 16.7 kilometres. You can compare the routes based on the stated distances and their respective themes.

Circular Routes with Different Focuses

The 12.9-kilometre L1 circular route passes through Dilschhausen. Its stops include two churches, the “Paradise” and the historic Rimberg Tower. The route thus combines scenery with several named sights.

L2 passes through Kernbach and, at 16.7 kilometres, is the longest of the three routes described. Here, nature and village history come together. The shorter L3 is 6.7 kilometres long, passes through fields and forest, and offers views of Caldern. It is described as family-friendly.

The Rimberg viewpoint can also be reached from Caldern via hiking trails. Trail conditions and signage may change, and access to the tower may vary. Check these conditions before your hike.

Monastery Mill and Accommodation

The monastery mill is a historic mill first mentioned in 1389. It originally belonged to a Cistercian monastery and later to the University of Marburg. The Pfeiffer family continued the milling tradition until 1987; afterwards, their grandson Markus Schautes carried it on. This history gives the mill a special place in the local story.

The “Zur Lahnbrücke” restaurant in Lahntal-Caldern offers meals and accommodation. As dining and accommodation options may change, check the services available before making your plans.

Lahntal: Culture and Nature in Other Places

The wider Lahntal destination also includes independent attractions in other places. In GoĂźfelden, the year 1802 is inscribed in Roman numerals on the eastern side of the old bridge. It can only be crossed on foot or by bicycle.

The “In the Footsteps of Otto Ubbelohde through Goßfelden” circular route was inaugurated in June 2010. It starts at the museum in the Lahn meadows, is around 1.5 kilometres long and has 16 stops; most of it runs through old Goßfelden. At the village locations that inspired them, stops present Ubbelohde’s drawings, illustrations and paintings, including fairy-tale illustrations, whose motifs can still be recognised today—or seem to be recognisable again.

Another hiking option in the wider Lahntal destination leads from Brungershausen to the Wichtelhäuser, a massive group of rocks. The stones, set a little way off the forest path, offer opportunities for climbing and views over the Lahntal, Kernbach and the Rimberg opposite.

A piece of regional history also survives at Caldern’s St. Nicholas Church: part of the former monastery wall is still standing and has been restored.
