Römershausen: Village History and Hiking Trails

The G12 circular trail passes through Römershausen; its stated distance is 13 kilometres and it takes four hours. Plan it as a hike in its own right: the time estimate makes it a longer activity, not a short detour. If you are considering Römershausen as a place to stay overnight, you will find an independent local history here alongside the hiking route.

Village Character and Historical Traces

Römershausen is located in the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park. The village has a cohesive character and an irregular layout; its position at the mouth of a valley on a ridge that slopes down towards the south provides a clear topographical reference. The nature park setting describes the landscape, while the layout and ridge give a more specific picture of the village’s form and location.

Römershausen was first mentioned in official documents in 1255 as “Rembreteshusin”. It is the second-oldest district of Gladenbach. The present-day Protestant church also brings together different periods: it dates back to a building from the mid-19th century, while an old bell in the church dates to the 13th century. These dates represent different milestones: the first documented mention, the bell and the later church building.

Guest accommodation includes family holiday homes, a large apartment building and play areas for children. This identifies holiday homes and the apartment building as different types of accommodation; the play areas add to the local amenities for children. Roads connect Römershausen with Weidenhausen and Bad Endbach, as well as with Rachelshausen and Runzhausen.

Gladenbach as Another Cultural and Hiking Destination

In the wider destination of Gladenbach, the Amt Blankenstein Local History Museum features a mineralogical collection, a working loom and exhibits on linen processing. It also has archaeological finds from prehistory and early history, including excavation finds from the castle. Natural history, crafts and archaeology are represented side by side, offering a different way to explore the region’s history from the documentary mention and architectural history of Römershausen.

Another hiking trail is specifically associated with Gladenbach: the Georg-Ludwig-Hartig Trail is about nine kilometres long. It runs from Georg-Ludwig-Hartig Park via Hinterländer Schweiz and the Schieferkauten, towards Sinkershausen and over Kirchberg to Gladenbach. For comparison when planning, this trail’s approximately nine kilometres can be set against the 13 kilometres of the G12 circular trail through Römershausen. The two routes therefore provide a guide to distance, without implying that their courses are the same.

The annual Cherry Market in Gladenbach may also be of interest when planning your dates. An additional Sunday for the Cherry Market has been held there since 1837. The Friday market includes a general goods market with more than 100 stalls, as well as a food alley with culinary specialities. The annual market also includes the election and crowning of a Cherry Queen, who then represents the town at various events for a year. If the market affects your travel plans, check the dates for the particular year.
