Immenhausen combines a historic town centre with several ways to explore its past: the city wall encloses the old centre, the Glass Museum is dedicated to glassware, and Eco Trails explore the history of settlement and mining. When planning your trip, it is worth treating the town’s history and its hikes as distinct areas of interest. The two trails also differ in their focus and length.

City Wall, Tower and Glass Museum

A city wall dating from the 13th century, about 3 km long, encircles Immenhausen’s historic town centre. Its layout makes the historic centre stand out as a distinct area.

The Horseshoe Tower became accessible to visitors in June 2004; inside, information panels explain the town’s history and urban renewal. You can obtain keys for access at the town hall or the Glass Museum during their opening hours. Check these times before your visit.

The permanent exhibitions at the Immenhausen Glass Museum showcase the history of glassware from Art Nouveau to the present day. Goblets, vases, bowls and other decorative and household glass illustrate the development of glass design from 1890 to today. This span of time invites visitors to consider design forms in relation to their use and how they have changed.

Eco Trails: Settlement History and Mining

Established in 2007, the Ahlberg-Mariendorf Cultural History Eco Trail starts in Mariendorf, is about 4.5 km long and explores the more than 2,000-year history of settlement around Ahlberg.

The former mines are the focus of the Holzhausen Reinhardswald Mining Eco Trail: The trail is about 17.2 km long in total and leads to the former mining sites at Gahrenberg, Kleeberg and Osterberg. Its routes pass through the landscape of the southern Reinhardswald, are easy to walk and have only gentle gradients. The three sections can be hiked from the “Roter Stock” or “Bürgerhaus” car parks in Holzhausen. Check the current parking conditions before setting out.

So when choosing between the two Eco Trails, both the subject and the length matter: the Ahlberg-Mariendorf Trail explores settlement history over about 4.5 km, while the mining trail covers about 17.2 km in total and leads to former mining sites.

In the wider Kassel destination

In the wider Kassel destination, Habichtswald Nature Park is characterised by extensive beech forests and numerous volcanic basalt peaks. Also within the wider Kassel destination, Reinhardswald Nature Park brings together centuries-old pollarded oaks, extensive beech and spruce forests, river valleys, natural stream landscapes, and calcareous grasslands with juniper and orchids. The two parks have distinct landscape profiles: basalt peaks and beech forests in Habichtswald contrast with the forests, valleys, stream landscapes and calcareous grasslands of Reinhardswald.

For cultural attractions, the wider Kassel destination also offers a discovery map published jointly by the city and the district of Kassel. It lists 70 cultural attractions and provides addresses, contact details, opening hours and links to their websites.
