Discover Lohfelden’s cultural history along a variety of routes: the “Cultural History” Eco Path links historic sites dating from the Late Bronze Age to the mid-20th century. You can also choose from trails of different lengths and with different focuses, historic buildings, parks, and cultural attractions.

Hiking trails of different lengths

The “Cultural History” Eco Path is about 13 kilometers long. It takes around three hours of walking time; you can also hike the route in two stages, using the suggested shortcuts. Splitting the route lets you explore the historic sites in two sections. If you’re planning a day trip, allow extra time for breaks.

Another cultural-historical hiking trail is the 14-kilometer Baddschensteig. It runs around Lohfelden-Vollmarshausen, following the boundaries of the district. The trail starts at the village linden tree in the town center. An old Thingstätte stands there, with a distinctive stone table where court proceedings were held in the Middle Ages. Its length and historical connections give the Baddschensteig a different character from the Eco Path.

For a shorter loop, try the approximately 4.5-kilometer “Follow the Path of Life” Impulsweg, with ten stations; it is fully accessible. The route along the Lohfelden side of Lindenberg is also accessible. It can be traveled on foot, by bicycle, with a stroller, or with a rollator. For a marked running route, the five-kilometer trail runs from the town hall to the “Green Center” and back. As the route’s maintenance should be checked locally, we recommend a quick check before setting off.

Parks and open spaces

The “Lohfelden Green Center” recreation area lies between Crumbach, Ochshausen, and Vollmarshausen. It offers seating, play, and sports areas, play areas for young children, a sensory trail, a fitness trail, and the “Dancing Oak” viewing platform. Alongside the longer hiking trails, there are also plenty of options for relaxing, playing, and getting active.

The approximately 9,600-square-meter Vorsterpark was established as a public park in 1970/1971 and offers opportunities for recreation, sports, and play. The park features a sculpture inspired by the fairy tale “The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was.” Since 2004, the municipality of Lohfelden has been part of the “Fairy Tale Trail” in Kassel district.

Local history and culture

Crumbach Church was built in its present form in 1770. Its tower is much older and is thought to have belonged to a fortified church dating from the 13th century. The “Craft, Half-Timbering, Work of Art” audio walk also starts here and leads through the historic center of Lohfelden-Crumbach. Check that the audio walk is technically available before your trip.

Four information boards tell the story of the former “Söhrebahn” railway line. They are located at Waldauer Weg/corner of the swimming pool entrance, at the “Old Ochshausen Station,” at Lange Straße/corner of Berliner Straße, and at the “Old Vollmarshausen Station.”

On the second floor of the Old Ochshausen School, the chess museum displays a collection of exhibits from different periods since the 12th century, as well as from a variety of countries and cultures. Parts of “Chess Picture Worlds” by Bernd Besser, a graphic designer and artist from Lohfelden, are also on display. Check access arrangements before your visit.

The town hall hosts two exhibitions each year, featuring changing themes and artworks. Visitors can attend the opening of each exhibition. These rotating art exhibitions add another cultural attraction alongside the historic sites and trails.

More ways to spend your time

Lohfelden’s outdoor swimming pool has one- and three-meter diving boards, a wide-wave slide, children’s and baby pools, a large lawn for games and sunbathing, mini golf, and beach volleyball. As opening is seasonal and operating arrangements may change, check the conditions for your visit. An attractive 18-hole mini golf course, run by an active mini golf club, is also right next to the outdoor pool. Seasonal operating hours may vary here too, so check with the operator in advance.

A marked access route to the Grimmsteig starts at the Lohfelden Löwenhof, Bachstraße 36. It follows the “Spangenberger Pfad” (X3, Wildbahn) past artworks by ARS NATURA to the Herchenbach hiking car park at the Crumbach shelter in Lohfelden. Please note: the Grimmsteig itself does not run through Lohfelden; the route described here is an access route.
