Perched on a basalt cone high above the Lahn and Lumda rivers, Staufenberg Castle is the town’s landmark. The Upper and Lower Castles form the two parts of the complex. There are also historic streets, two museums with different collections, and a multimedia trail dedicated to Peter Kurzeck.

Castle and views over the Lahn and Lumda

Staufenberg Castle is listed as a cultural monument in Hesse’s heritage register. The Upper Castle is a ruin that attracts visitors. If you plan to visit, check the access conditions beforehand. A spiral staircase in the corner tower leads to views over the Lahn and Lumda valleys. As access to the tower may vary, it is also advisable to check in advance.

The surviving Gothic castle walls provide a backdrop for festivals and theatrical performances. If you would like to combine your trip with a performance, check the current events schedule. This lets you experience the castle alongside its cultural use without assuming that a particular event will be taking place.

Half-timbered houses and protected historic streets

The old townscape offers a different perspective on Staufenberg’s architectural history. The protected historic ensemble includes the densely built-up streets of Burggasse, Obergasse, Mittelgasse and Hintergasse. Well-preserved half-timbered houses can be found especially along Ober-, Hinter-, Burg- and Mittelgasse. The gate tower is a surviving part of the former town wall. The streets, houses and tower showcase different aspects of the historic townscape—from dense streets to a surviving remnant of the town fortifications.

Two museums, distinct areas of focus

The Staufenberg Local History Museum presents linen production. Other topics include tools used in village crafts, agricultural implements and machinery. A large collection of historic cameras adds to these exhibits, with Leitz and Leica equipment featuring prominently.

The Burghaus Museum, which is part of the Upper Castle complex, focuses on the history of the castle. Its collection includes antique firearms, tools excavated at the castle, and ceramic finds. Together, the two museums offer different perspectives: the Local History Museum explores crafts, agriculture and photographic technology, among other subjects, while the Burghaus Museum is dedicated to the castle and its finds.

Peter Kurzeck Trail and a break below the castle

The Peter Kurzeck Trail runs through and around Staufenberg. Audio and film recordings are used at twelve stops; the texts are in German. Content and technical availability may change. Check what is available for your visit beforehand, and take the language into account when planning to do the trail with others.

Below the castle, a beer garden offers views into the valleys and a place to stop for refreshments after a walk or a climb up to the castle. Food and drink services may change, so check current opening arrangements before your trip.

Stay overnight in the Lower Castle

The Lower Castle houses a hotel and a restaurant. Guests can stay and dine there in a castle setting. An overnight stay within the castle complex is therefore one of the options available locally. Check current opening arrangements before your trip if you are planning your stay around it.
