The Muschenheim Cultural-Historical Hiking Trail offers two different hiking options. Other highlights include the historic old town, paths along the Wetter and the history of Arnsburg Monastery.
Monastery History and Traces in the Town
Arnsburg Monastery is near Lich and has almost nine centuries of history. Cuno of Münzenberg founded it in 1174 as a Cistercian monastery. Lich’s Evangelical Marienstiftskirche is also connected to the monastery: its Baroque pulpit originally stood at Arnsburg Monastery. The church is a Late Gothic hall church, rebuilt in 1511. These two sites bring visitors into contact with different chapters of architectural and monastic history.
The Lich town tower is a remnant of the historic fortifications. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; check access in advance. Lich’s historic old town is also worth exploring. Another historical connection is the Limes: 7.5 kilometres of it run through the municipality of Lich.
Town Trails and Hiking Routes
Route 1 of the Muschenheim Cultural-Historical Hiking Trail is 10.2 kilometres long and covers the entire cultural trail. The 4.1-kilometre Route 2 focuses on Arnsburg Monastery, nearby castle remains, the fort and the amphitheatre. The routes therefore differ both in length and in their historical highlights.
The Lich Town Trail leads up gentle slopes to viewpoints around the town and runs mostly on paths with natural surfaces. It takes in nature along the Wetter and passes wetlands and nearby woods. As trail features may change when the route is altered, check the latest information about the Town Trail before setting out.
In the Gottesackertal, a cycling and walking path follows the Wetter towards Lich. The valley includes ponds, weirs and pastureland associated with the nearby monastery’s use of the area. For a longer regional route, the 70-kilometre Residenzenring hiking trail connects Lich with Grünberg, Hungen and Laubach and is divided into four stages. Route information may be updated; check the current course before planning your stages.
Explore Arnsburg Monastery and Nature
Arnsburg Monastery has hiking trails, expansive views and a circular route along the monastery wall. The church ruin and the Paradies are used for church services, devotions, weddings and special religious events. As the programme and access may change, check what is scheduled for your date before visiting.
The Klosterwald wildlife park is a few hundred metres from Arnsburg Monastery. It is home to deer, mouflon, sika deer, emus, alpacas and other animals. Animal populations and visitor rules may change; check the latest conditions before your visit.
Guided Tours, Brewery and Accommodation
Traditional town tours and costumed walks offer more ways to discover Lich. The costumed walks also feature theatrical performances and tastings. Dates and booking options may change, so check in advance what is available for your visit. The Licher Jhring-Melchior private brewery offers opportunities to learn more about brewing, visit the brewery and sample beer specialities. For specific plans, check the availability of these offers in advance.
There is a motorhome parking area on the outskirts of Muschenheim. Check the facilities and terms of use before travelling. If making a specific booking, check that the location and services offered suit your plans.
