Rasdorf offers two different ways to explore its character: the village green stands out for its exceptional dimensions, while the fortified cemetery and Point Alpha offer insights into historical topics. The “Der Rasdorfer” Extratour also provides a longer hike with a specified duration and difficulty level. This raises a practical question for your plans: should the day be devoted mainly to the hike or to the village’s architectural and historical highlights?

The Village Green and Fortified Cemetery

The Rasdorf village green is 170 metres long and 75 metres wide; it is the largest village square in Hesse. At more than twice as long as it is wide, its dimensions are easy to appreciate. These measurements give it a different emphasis from the historical themes of the fortified cemetery and Point Alpha. The green is in the centre of Rasdorf and is also one of the possible starting points for the “Der Rasdorfer” Extratour. This means the square can be understood both through its unusual dimensions and through its role in planning a hike.

The medieval fortified cemetery in Rasdorf has a high wall and four defensive towers with loopholes. The loopholes illustrate its defensive character, while the wall and towers define the complex’s architecture. An information pillar at the cemetery provides information about the former church building; a QR code links to an audio file with further information about the church and the fortified cemetery.

Point Alpha: The Cold War and Everyday Life in the Border Region

Point Alpha broadens this local perspective to include the history of the Cold War. Until 1989, Point Alpha was the U.S. Army’s most important observation post on the former inner German border. The year 1989 marks the end of this historical role. At the US Camp Point Alpha, the “Cold War” exhibition explores Point Alpha’s history, military life and strategic significance. The “Everyday Life” exhibition focuses on how people in the Hessian border region lived alongside American soldiers. The two titles highlight different themes: “Cold War” focuses on the military and strategic perspective, while “Everyday Life” explores life together in the border region. This contrast can help you decide in advance which historical themes you want to focus on.

Hiking the “Der Rasdorfer” Extratour

The “Der Rasdorfer” Extratour is a circular route through a varied landscape and past sights from different historical periods. A large red “R” marks the trail. The route is 15.5 kilometres long, takes about five hours, is of moderate difficulty and includes 368 metres of elevation gain. The approximate duration helps with planning your time; the moderate difficulty is a separate indication of the hike’s level of challenge. Plan for it as a longer activity. Route details may change if the trail is modified, so it is worth checking the current route information before setting out.

You can start at the village green in the centre of Rasdorf or at the Point Alpha Memorial. You can plan your hike around either of these named starting points.
