Fürth is a state-recognised health resort located within the Geo-Nature Park. The local activities combine different types of hiking with art, forests and local history. For your stay, you can first consider whether you would prefer to focus on a route with an artistic connection, paths through mixed forest and nature-related topics, or historical destinations. The specific route lengths and themes provide a clear basis for choosing.
Hiking trails with different profiles
The four-kilometre-long Sparkassenstiftung Starkenburg Art Trail is lined with abstract sculptures and leads as far as Lindenfels. It should not be confused with the Fürth Art Trail, where you can see artworks created in 2007 by ten artists at the initiative of Sparkassenstiftung Starkenburg. The Art Bench Trail is another route. It is 9.73 kilometres long and leads around the Steinbachwiesen multi-generational park in Fürth, uphill towards Wagenberg, and along the edge of the forest towards Altlechtern Valley and Erzberg. Galgenhohl in Kröckelbach marks the turning point; the route then leads back to Steinbach.
The 13-kilometre Wagenberg hike offers a different focus. It runs mostly through mixed forest between Fürth and Hammelbach and offers views of Fürth and the Weschnitz Valley along the way. The Kahlberg Loop adds a nature-only hiking trail to the selection. The routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in their connection to art, forest sections and the views along the way.
Forest, cycling and guided themed tours
Fürth Forest has a bee information trail, a forest education trail and a fitness trail. Their names reflect the range of options, from nature-related topics to exercise. There are also circular routes for mountain biking in the Fürth municipal area.
The Forest Education Centre at Forsthaus Almen in Weschnitz, a district of Fürth, is the starting point for tours covering geology and soil science, historical mining, and the craft of charcoal burning. The availability of individual tours may vary, so check what is on offer before planning. Since 2010, a dedicated team in Fürth has been offering guided hikes and themed talks. If you plan to join a particular activity, check in advance that it is taking place at your preferred time.
Culture and pilgrimage tradition
The Odenwald Model Railway Exhibition has been in the municipality of Fürth since 2008. Walburgis Chapel is located above Weschnitz, where pilgrimages have been documented since Carolingian times. A joint ceremonial church service is held there every year on 1 May. Many Christians from throughout the Weschnitz Valley and from the Bergstraße region make the pilgrimage. If you would like to include this event in your trip, check the programme for the relevant year in advance.
Considering Fürth as a place to stay
When looking for a holiday apartment in Fürth, you can use your interests as a first filter: would you like to focus on hiking trails and nature-related topics, art or history? If you want a guided tour or the 1 May church service to be part of your trip, coordinate your plans with the current schedule or annual programme.
