Abtsteinach offers several distinct themes for your trip: the art trail with its permanently installed works, St Boniface’s Church dating from the 17th century, hiking trails with different route profiles, and habitats in the restored areas of the Mackenheim quarry. You can tailor your stay to your interests: culture, hiking, mountain biking or a cross-country ski trail, if there is enough snow in winter. Route lengths and elevation gain make it easy to compare the outdoor options.

Art, church and local history

More than 130 weather-resistant sculptures and paintings are permanently installed along the art trail. The variety of art forms gives the trail its own distinct cultural character. The notable St Boniface’s Church in Ober-Abtsteinach dates from the 17th century and adds a historical touch. When choosing cultural themes for your trip, you can enjoy both permanently installed artworks and a tangible connection to local history.

Hiking trails and the quarry

The A 6 Quarry Trail is about 12 kilometres long and has 404 metres of elevation gain. A detour leads to the Mackenheim geopoint, which offers a view into the quarry. The A 1 Panorama Trail passes five Odenwald elevations over 500 metres high, is about 17 kilometres long and has 972 metres of elevation gain.

By comparison, A 6 is around five kilometres shorter, while A 1 has 972 rather than 404 metres of elevation gain. You can choose your hike based on route length and elevation gain: the Quarry Trail is the shorter option, while the Panorama Trail covers more distance and elevation.

A geopoint ensemble at the Mackenheim quarry’s viewing platform was renewed in 2025. The quarry’s restored areas provide habitats for endangered animal and plant species. These include sand lizards, yellow-bellied toads, greenfinches and eagle owls, as well as wall lettuce and lesser centaury. The viewpoint and habitats show different sides of the same quarry.

Mountain biking and a winter option

The A1 Abtsteinach mountain bike route runs for 27 kilometres, with 830 metres of elevation gain, around Abtsteinach. It is relatively easy technically, but still demanding in terms of fitness. When assessing the route, keep both aspects in mind: the technical rating alone does not tell you everything about the fitness required.

If there is enough snow, members of the SGU ski club groom the Hardberg cross-country ski trail. If you want to plan your winter trip around this option, check the snow conditions in advance.
