Around 5,000 steps define Blankenese’s Stair Quarter. Its walkable hillside neighbourhood, historic houses and paths down to the Elbe give the area its distinctive character. Together with the viewpoints on the Süllberg and the Elbe Route, Blankenese offers various ways to plan a stay. When looking for a holiday apartment, one simple question can help: should the focus be on the Stair Quarter and its views, or also on a longer stretch along the Elbe?

Explore the Stair Quarter on foot

Guided walks pass historic houses, the church at the market square and parks, and descend the steps to the Elbe. This means the experience is about more than individual attractions: the paths through the hillside neighbourhood are part of it too. The approximately 5,000 steps are a useful point of reference for planning, but they do not indicate walking time. If you want to visit specific places, you can check their access conditions in advance.

Views of the Elbe, the beach and lighthouses

From the SĂĽllberg and viewpoints on the Elbe hillside, you can look across the river, watch container ships pass and see Finkenwerder. The descent leads to the Elbe beach. The Unterfeuer and Oberfeuer lighthouses are other visitor destinations associated with the area. This allows you to choose different priorities when planning: views of the river and shipping traffic, time at the beach, or a visit to the lighthouses. These are different facets of the landscape, not merely stops on a single walk.

Plan the Elbe Route and your journey

A 23-kilometre Elbe Route runs from Wedel through Blankenese and on to Teufelsbrück, Övelgönne and the Landungsbrücken. If you plan a shorter route, you can end it after about 10 kilometres at Blankenese station; before that, the path climbs through the Stair Quarter. This lets you choose between the full route and a shorter stretch without assuming a walking time. Blankenese is served by the S1 and S11. Check the signage and current travel information before setting out.

Hamburg as the wider travel destination

The wider travel destination of Hamburg offers other city views and themes. The Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District, including the Chilehaus, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. The Elbphilharmonie Plaza is 37 metres above ground and offers views of the Elbe, the harbour, the Speicherstadt and HafenCity. Unlike Blankenese’s steps, slopes and viewpoints, the focus here is on architectural ensembles and a panorama across different parts of Hamburg.

Hamburg’s green spaces and waterways offer their own possibilities too: Planten un Blomen is a 45-hectare park with flower beds, lawns, streams, small lakes and themed gardens. Water-light concerts take place every evening in the park lake from May to September; check the current programme before your trip. Paths along the banks of the Outer Alster invite you to stroll and are popular with joggers. The Alster is also a destination for stand-up paddling, canoeing and pedal boating. So the wider travel destination of Hamburg offers a choice of parkland and waterside activities alongside Blankenese’s Elbe hillside.
