Around 1,000 hectares of ponds make Teichland one of Central Europe’s significant pond regions. About 30 percent of the municipality’s area is covered by water, most of it used for fish farming. This gives a stay a clear focus on the landscape: ponds, nature watching and cycling routes offer different ways to explore the area.

Ponds, Waterbirds and Views

At 222 hectares, Neuendorfer Oberteich is Germany’s largest pond. You can observe waterbirds from several viewing points around the ponds. Teichland is surrounded by nature and landscape conservation areas; numerous rare animal and plant species are also found here. Those interested in habitats will find another special focus on the Hochkippe, which covers around 440 hectares and provides a habitat for many bird and insect species.

Bärenbrücker Höhe rises up to 33 metres above the surrounding landscape and offers an elevated viewpoint. A circular trail on the hill features steles by artist Eberhard Krüger and offers views of the surrounding area. A visit thus focuses both on the ponds and their birdlife, and on views across the wider landscape.

Cycling Routes and a Pondside Excursion Destination

The Spree Cycle Route, Gurken Cycle Route, Fürst-Pückler Cycle Route and Bergbautour pass directly through Teichland. These four named routes make the area appealing to cyclists, though they do not form a single combined tour. Route conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

In the wider Spree-Neiße travel destination, the Spree Cycle Route crosses the region for around 60 kilometres and runs mostly along paved river dykes. In Teichland itself, Maustmühle is a historic excursion destination for cyclists: the restaurant on Neuendorfer Oberteich reopened in 1920 and had already become a popular cycling destination before the Second World War. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether it will be possible on your chosen date.

Sorbian-Wendish Traditions and Leisure Activities

Teichland preserves Sorbian-Wendish traditions. Zapust is celebrated in February with Lower Sorbian traditional dress. Traditional festivities also include the Easter bonfire and Hahnrupfen, or harvest festival, organised by local young people. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the specific dates for your travel period.

Erlebnispark Teichland is a leisure park with mini golf, a summer toboggan run and a playground. It also has an inflatable play area; availability depends on the weather and staffing. In Maust, visitors can visit the riding and boarding stable, home to the Pferdefreunde Maust riding and driving club. As stable and club arrangements can change, check in advance whether a visit will be possible on your chosen date.

More to Explore in the Wider Spree-Neiße Travel Destination

Beyond Teichland, the wider Spree-Neiße travel destination offers a range of themes. The East German Rose Garden in Forst (Lausitz) is a 17-hectare park where visitors can admire tens of thousands of roses in almost 1,000 varieties. When planning your stay, it is worth distinguishing between experiences in Teichland itself and other attractions across the region.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay in Teichland, you can plan around your personal interests: nature watching by the ponds, cycling, cultural events or a visit to the leisure park. For seasonal festivities and visits where conditions may change, it is advisable to check dates and visiting arrangements in advance.
