Spremberg brings together a range of things to discover: in Slamener Kuthen Nature Park, the Spree floodplain takes center stage, while the castle, museum and lanes around the market offer insights into the city’s history. There are also paths in the city park, an observation tower and a weekly market. Which focus suits your stay depends on whether you would rather experience nature, explore history or get to know the city center.

Nature in the Spree floodplain

The small Slamener Kuthen Nature Park preserves a stretch of the natural Spree floodplain and is part of the Slamer Heide landscape protection area. Numerous plant and animal species listed on the Red List can be found in the Kuthen forest. This gives the nature park a distinct focus on nature and species conservation within Spremberg.

The completed part of NABU’s plan for the nature park includes two differently described trails: the Nature-Experience-Energy hiking trail and a short hiking trail through the Kuthen forest. If you would like to combine walks with a nature theme, you can use these trails as a guide when making your own choice. No information about duration or difficulty is provided.

Castle, museum and city history

An early German tower castle was built on the site of today’s Spremberg Castle as early as the 11th century to protect the crossing over the Spree. The Lower Lusatian Heath Museum is now housed in the castle. Its exhibitions focus on the history of the region; the museum also displays documents about the life and work of the writer Erwin Strittmatter, who was born in Spremberg. The castle site and exhibition thus bring together city history, regional history and literature.

The museum is largely barrier-free. Visitors with limited mobility and parents with strollers can enter the building without steps via the courtyard; an easily accessible elevator serves all exhibition levels. If you are planning a visit to the museum, you can take this access information into account.

City tours also offer a way to explore Spremberg’s history and can be booked directly with the city guides. One bookable historical tour presents the story of Jutta von Kittlitz and Seyfried von Loeben in a portrayal set in the late 11th century. It therefore offers a different perspective from a tour of the Heath Museum’s exhibitions.

City park, views and downtown

The Bismarck Tower in Spremberg’s city park has two viewing platforms overlooking the city in the Spree Valley. Those interested in paths through the park will also find a section of the European long-distance hiking trail E10 there: it passes the fountain, the lapidarium and Sängerblick. The tower and long-distance trail thus offer two different perspectives on the city park—views from above and a route guided by named park landmarks.

In the center, well-kept townhouses, shops, cafés and restaurants line the narrow lanes around the market. The Sonntagsches Haus is considered the city’s oldest residential building. For a stay with an interest in architecture and city life, the lanes, the market area and this historic home offer different things to discover while exploring the center.

The Spremberg weekly market takes place twice a week and offers fresh food as well as an opportunity to connect with locals. Market days can change, so check the current schedule before your visit. This makes it easier to fit a visit to the market around the other interests you have during your stay, without letting the market dictate your plans.

More to explore in the wider Spree-Neiße destination

The wider Spree-Neiße destination also offers ideas of its own: the East German Rose Garden in Forst (Lausitz) is a 17-hectare park with tens of thousands of roses in almost 1,000 varieties. The Spree Cycle Route crosses the region for about 60 kilometers, mostly along paved river dikes. These regional attractions broaden the picture beyond Spremberg’s own nature, culture and city highlights.
