When choosing Kolkwitz for a stay, you can focus on a particular route, landscape or local history. The “Around Kolkwitz” circular route passes through Kolkwitz, also known as Gołkojce; other themes can be found in various districts of the municipality. These include the church in Papitz, the toy museum in Kackrow and the Oberteich pond in Glinzig. The differences between these places can help you plan your stay around walking routes, culture or activities.
Routes and the Spreewald landscape
The “Around Kolkwitz” circular route offers a 12-kilometre shortcut through Kolkwitz, also known as Gołkojce. In the surrounding area, it follows forest, field and meadow paths and passes ponds, pools and alder carrs. The landscape also includes gentle hills in pine and mixed forests. The route thus combines a clearly specified length with a variety of landscapes; when choosing, you can consider whether you would prefer forest paths, open spaces or the areas around the water.
Two roads connecting places within the municipality of Kolkwitz offer a different perspective on the landscape. Specifically, these are the old local road between Papitz and Milkersdorf and the road between Kunersdorf and Papitz. Both offer a chance to experience a typical Spreewald landscape, where rows of trees separate fields and meadows. In the municipality of Kolkwitz, the villages of Babow and Milkersdorf, as well as part of the village of Papitz, lie within the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The protected-area designation therefore applies to specific parts of the municipality.
Churches, a museum and local history
The Late Gothic church in Papitz, a village within the municipality of Kolkwitz, has a 37-metre-high tower. Its furnishings include a church bell dating from 1396 and a historic organ from 1827/28. The tower, bell and organ each highlight a different aspect of the church’s history. If you are interested in architecture and church furnishings, Papitz offers a specific focus within the municipality.
The Knabe family has established a toy museum in Kackrow, a village within the municipality of Kolkwitz. Going from Papitz to Kackrow means shifting from church architecture and furnishings to a different cultural theme; the church and museum are in different villages.
The former Kolkwitz clinic cannot currently be visited or toured, as it is private property and entry is not permitted.
Equestrian sports, fishing and regional routes
There are seven riding stables in the municipality of Kolkwitz, offering activities such as riding holidays, horse breeding and riding lessons. Papitz, a village within the municipality of Kolkwitz, is also known for an annual riding and show-jumping tournament. These are different ways to get involved: activities at several stables and a recurring tournament in one village. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the specific dates in advance.
The Oberteich pond, covering about 35 hectares, is in Glinzig, a village within the municipality of Kolkwitz. It opened as a fishing pond in 1992. With a bit of luck, anglers can catch pike, zander, catfish and eel. This gives you a specific fishing option alongside routes, churches and equestrian sports.
There are other themed routes in the Spree-Neiße travel destination. The Spree Cycle Route crosses the region for about 60 kilometres, mostly along paved river dykes. The Lower Lusatian Mining Tour passes active lignite open-cast mines and reclaimed landscapes. The Fürst-Pückler-Weg showcases landscape design from Pückler’s time and the present day. These regional routes are distinct from the paths and places within the municipality of Kolkwitz.
