The Wendish-German Local History Museum in Jänschwalde-Dorf/Janšojce-Wjas offers a distinctive cultural highlight: a collection of more than 1,000 ceramic pieces is displayed in the restored former parish barn. Another focus is the flax exhibition. Its centrepiece is a working treadle loom for weaving linen. The ceramics and the loom offer different perspectives on the objects on display and the craft of weaving. Those interested in cultural history will find two clearly distinct themes here.
The municipality’s customs also give your stay a seasonal framework. The districts of Jänschwalde celebrate Easter customs, harvest festivals and Fastnacht celebrations throughout the year. On the evening of the fourth Sunday in Advent, the Janšojski bog, the Jänschwalde Christkind, makes its way through the wintry village in an elaborately decorated costume, its face covered and a small bell in its hand. In silence, it gives sweets to the children. While the other customs mentioned take place throughout the year, this one is tied to a specific evening during Advent. The Jänschwalde brass music festival is also held in the municipality every two years.
Regular church services are held in the Protestant churches in Jänschwalde/Janšojce, Drewitz/Drjejce and Grießen/Grěšna. Together with the local history museum and the customs, they offer a range of cultural points of interest to consider when planning your trip.
Cycling and sporting activities
If you would like to make your stay more active, consider the municipality’s cycling routes: numerous paved cycle routes run through Jänschwalde. This offers a different focus from the exhibitions and customs; here, cycling takes centre stage. No individual routes are specified, so you can plan your rides separately.
The motor sports centre with its go-kart track is another sporting option. If you enjoy sports, you could consider it as a possible activity. Check in advance whether a visit is possible on your chosen date.
Spree-Neiße as a wider region
Beyond the municipality, the wider destination of Spree-Neiße offers further themes that differ from the local highlights. The Sorbian Impressions Tour offers insights into the life and traditions of the Sorbian/Wendish minority living in the region. The Fürst-Pückler-Weg showcases examples of landscape design from Pückler’s time and the present day. The Lower Lusatian Mining Tour passes active open-cast lignite mines and landscapes that have been reclaimed after mining. Each of the three offerings has a different focus: cultural traditions, designed landscapes and post-mining landscapes.
The East German Rose Garden in Forst (Lausitz) is also part of the wider destination of Spree-Neiße. This 17-hectare park offers visitors tens of thousands of roses in almost 1,000 varieties. The focus there is on a botanical collection, while Jänschwalde offers other themes: the Wendish-German Local History Museum, the municipality’s customs and its cycle routes.
Find a holiday apartment to suit your travel interests
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by choosing the focus you want: would you like your stay to centre mainly on the local history museum and the municipality’s themes, or would you like to include Spree-Neiße as a wider regional destination? This distinction can help clarify what you are looking for, without treating local and regional offerings as the same.
