Schöneiche bei Berlin offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: a historic center, a former palace church used for concerts, cultural venues and the Kleine Spreewaldpark. These topics offer a good way to see which aspects of the town interest you most—from architectural history and exhibitions to paths through a landscaped park.

Getting there and finding your way

Tram 88 is a useful point of reference for getting around by public transport. It connects Berlin-Friedrichshagen S-Bahn station with Schöneiche and Rüdersdorf. The tram began operating on the route between Friedrichshagen and Schöneiche/Schloss on August 28, 1910. For a specific journey, it is advisable to check the timetable and stops in advance, as services and stops may change.

Historic center and architectural history

Schöneiche’s historic center is in Kleinschönebeck. The old linear village dates back to the settlement of the Margraviate of Brandenburg in the first half of the 13th century. Kleinschönebeck’s village green is also a protected monument. Those interested in the town’s development over time will find a different perspective here than at the later cultural and park sites.

The Former Palace Church brings together different architectural periods: the early Gothic fieldstone building was renovated and enlarged in 1725, with a Baroque-rendered exterior. Since 1994, the church has been used as a concert hall. Its architecture thus reflects a long history of building changes; the concert program may vary.

The Landhof housing estate showcases a different building method: all its buildings were constructed from wood and clay. Its origins lie in a social and ecological building project. In 1991, 13 young families with several children joined together in a self-build project; most of the buildings were constructed between 1994 and 1996. Here, the construction method and the story of its origins go hand in hand, without reducing the estate to a single period.

Paths and nature at the Kleine Spreewaldpark

The Kleine Spreewaldpark covers 4.5 hectares. Its history began in the 1920s, when an artificial network of canals reminiscent of the Spreewald was created there for boating excursions.

Today, you can explore the park on foot via several themed trails: the Water, Art, Nature Education, Senses and Geology trails each focus on a different theme. The grounds also include a large nature-themed playground. Those particularly interested in the Senses Trail can explore it on a guided tour. The trails offer different perspectives on the same park landscape rather than prescribing just one route.

Cultural venues and insights into everyday life

The Kulturgießerei is located in former workshops of the Seiler art foundry and has an industrial-cultural character. Regular concerts and events are held there, with a focus on theater, literature, music and film. Rotating exhibitions by local and other artists can be visited during opening hours. As the program may change, it is worth checking current events and opening hours before your visit.

The municipal library is also part of Schöneiche’s cultural offerings. Its events include reading promotion, introductory sessions for school classes and author readings. If you want to plan your stay around a specific cultural event, check the relevant event dates.

For a glimpse into the former life of a farming household, the local history museum shows how such a family lived around 1800. The Historic Rough-Fodder Barn, meanwhile, is a two-story half-timbered building with a mansard roof. Its grain chute can still be seen; access arrangements may change, so check them before visiting. Almost every year, a white stork family nests on the remains of the former palace distillery at the Stork Tower.
