The main village of Wiesenau is a Rundling village. First mentioned as Krebisguche in 1368, it was later called Krebsjauche until 1919. Its settlement form and changing historical place names provide a concrete starting point for the village’s history. Kunitz-Loose is another point of historical interest: until 1945, this district belonged to the village of Kunitz, now Kunice in Poland.

Church and Places of Remembrance

The Protestant church stands in the center of Wiesenau and is part of the Brieskow-Finkenheerd–Ziltendorf parish district. A memorial stone in its churchyard commemorates the 1997 Oder flood. Another memorial there is dedicated to the victims of both world wars, as well as to the victims of the consequences of war, arbitrary rule and violence. The different memorials commemorate both a specific event and broader experiences of war and violence.

Two Stolpersteine were also laid in Wiesenau on August 31, 2018. They commemorate victims of the persecution of Jewish people under Nazi rule in Germany from 1933 to 1945. Together with the memorials in the churchyard, they make local remembrance culture a central theme for exploring Wiesenau.

Village Church Day and Herb Workshops

Since the new church was built, a Village Church Day has been held in Wiesenau every year. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates in advance. Another way to get a taste of a local offering is to take one of the small herb workshops run by Honigstube Silke Linder in Kunitzer Loose. They take place by appointment; there are no regular opening hours. Workshops can be booked online or by phone. It is best to check current dates and availability directly with the operator.

More highlights in the wider Oder-Spree destination

The wider Oder-Spree destination offers its own cultural and landscape highlights. In Bad Saarow, the Lesser Promenade runs for about 1.5 kilometers along the lakeshore, from Kurpark to Fontanepark. In Neuzelle, the Baroque Garden offers a different focus: the five-hectare garden was restored according to original plans from the 1758 abbey atlas and features Baroque avenues, water features and terraces. The listed ensemble of Beeskow Castle, with buildings dating from 1250 to 1550, showcases architectural history; its 30-meter-high keep has a viewing platform. The lakeside path, garden and castle ensemble each offer their own highlights alongside Wiesenau’s village history and remembrance culture. The wider Oder-Spree destination extends beyond architectural and garden history to Lake Scharmützelsee: it covers about 1,200 hectares and is around 30 meters deep. Its clear water, with visibility of up to four meters, draws anglers, divers, sailors and swimmers to the region.
