Village Church and Traditional Local Character
The listed Protestant village church is a striking building in Großmutz. Its Neo-Gothic fieldstone structure was built in 1814/15 on the remains of an earlier Early Gothic building. The square west tower transitions into an octagonal upper section. Inside, the furnishings include a horseshoe gallery and a simple Neoclassical pulpit wall dating from around 1815.
A Late Gothic brick cemetery portal leads to the church entrance; it is a surviving historic feature of the church grounds. Großmutz is considered a typical Brandenburg village; the village green and the overall layout are among the features of its traditional character. Two scales therefore sit side by side: the architectural history of a single building and the traditional description of the settlement’s form.
More topics in the broader destination of Löwenberger Land
The broader destination of Löwenberger Land offers other cultural and nature-related attractions. Schloss & Gut Liebenberg in Liebenberg is a listed ensemble comprising a castle, a historic fieldstone church and an extensive park. The castle museum on the estate features permanent exhibitions on the history of Liebenberg and the von und zu Eulenburg and Hertefeld family, historic agricultural technology, and hunting. Check access arrangements before your visit. Historic guided tours of Schloss & Gut Liebenberg can be booked year-round at flexible times.
Another historical attraction is Schloss Hoppenrade: the manor house, also called a castle, has a former chapel and a landscaped park. A walk in the castle park at Hoppenrade is one of the excursion options in Löwenberger Land. In Falkenthal, parts of the route of the old Berlin–Stettin post road have been preserved, and some sections are signposted as a cycle path. This means that the site brings together a historic road route and a cycle path route that is only partly signposted.
Hiking and nature are also among the region’s attractions. Extensive hikes are possible through the Griebener Heide and the Harenzacken Nature Reserve; well-signposted cycle routes are available to cycle tourists. Although numerous pairs of storks nest year after year on the tops of old electricity pylons in Falkenthal, activity at individual nests may vary. The bases of the pylons display signs with arrival and departure dates, as well as the number of young at each nest since 2003.
Getting to Schloss & Gut Liebenberg
A dedicated footpath and cycle path connects the Grüneberg and Löwenberg railway stations to Schloss & Gut Liebenberg. Depending on the station you start from, the stated distance is approximately 4–6 km; the path is unlit. The bus stops Liebenberg Bergsdorfer Straße, Liebenberg Parkweg and Liebenberg Grüneberger Straße are next to Schloss & Gut Liebenberg. Check the latest services before travelling by bus. For planning, both the station you start from and the approximate route distance, as well as the location of the stops next to the estate, are relevant.
