If you’re looking for a place with a history of milling in Sagritz, you’ll find the historic Kanow Mill right on the Dahme River. The river still powers it today. Other specific points of interest include the von Kleist family’s manor estate, traditional production methods and two cycling routes that pass the mill. This gives you different ways to explore the area: through its milling operations, manor history and local craftsmanship.

Kanow Mill: Hydropower and Oil Production

A mill had already stood here in the 16th century; its first documented mention dates to 1527. The Kanow Mill has been family-owned since 1815. These dates mark different milestones: 1527 refers to the first written mention, and 1815 to the start of family ownership. The production methods also distinguish the mill as a place of craftsmanship: edible oils are made using traditional, artisanal methods, rather than the processes used in industrial oil mills. The mill produces more than 20 different varieties of cold-pressed oil.

Inside the Mill and Seasonal Tour

In the museum room, visitors can look through a glass panel directly into the production area and observe the oil miller at work. To combine this glimpse with information about the mill’s history and oil production, you can plan a guided tour: from April to October, tours take place every Tuesday at 10 a.m. The tour of the historic mill includes insights into traditional oil production and an oil tasting. As the seasonal schedule may change, check the current arrangements before your visit.

Cycling Routes and Bikes

The Gurkenradweg passes right by the Kanow Mill. The DahmeRadweg also passes the mill; its route follows the DahmeMühlenweg and continues through Sagritz. This means the two cycling routes share a landmark, while the described section of the DahmeRadweg also continues through the village. There are four touring bikes with step-through frames at Gutshof Sagritz, available for day trips. They are primarily lent to house guests; check availability in advance.

Manor History and Visible Remnants of the Park

Count Eduard von Kleist had the manor estate built in 1840. Gutshof Sagritz is a former knight’s estate belonging to the von Kleist family. The old trees still make parts of the park easy to identify. The manor estate therefore offers a different historical point of reference from the mill: the focus here is on the estate and the park layout that can still be traced through its trees. The two places can also be distinguished by date: the mill was first mentioned in a document in 1527, while the manor estate was built in 1840.

Handmade Soap

Another example of local production is the Gut Sagritz soap workshop. It makes soap by hand in small batches. The soaps are made exclusively with goat’s milk from certified organic farming, pure vegetable oils, non-hydrogenated vegetable fats and natural essential oils for fragrance. Sagritz is home to different kinds of craftsmanship: the Kanow Mill’s traditional oil production and small-batch soap making.
