In Liepe, two distinct travel interests have tangible points of reference: the architectural history of today’s village church and the network of trails at Landhof. You can give culture and outdoor activities different priorities as you plan. Advance booking is important for guided tours; when cycling, it is worth paying attention to the type of route.
Village Church and Mill History
Today’s Liepe village church is a half-timbered church. Its weatherboarded west tower is square and has two levels. The church was built from 1950 to 1954 on the site of a predecessor church. The half-timbered construction and the shape of the tower provide two specific features that can be used to describe its architecture. Tours of the church and village can be arranged with advance booking. So if you are planning a tour, arrange it in advance.
The town’s history also includes the Grambergsche Mill and the Friedrich Wilhelms Mill of Pattri. Pattri’s mill was built in 1841; the Grambergsche followed shortly afterward. Both were among the oldest sawmills in the town. This brings two historical periods into focus: the early history of sawmilling and the construction of today’s village church more than a century later. It adds to the picture of Liepe a local history that is not centered on just one building.
Trails and Cycling
The area around Landhof Liepe has an extensive network of trails. The paved towpaths are used by cyclists, inline skaters and wheelchair users. The long-distance cycle route L29 offers a different kind of journey: it runs along the road through Liepe’s village center, with mixed traffic. This section is 492 meters long. These differences matter when planning: one route involves paved towpaths in the area around Landhof, while the other is a section of road with mixed traffic. Check local conditions before setting out.
Barnim as the Wider Region
The wider travel destination of Barnim offers additional, explicitly regional highlights. Chorin Monastery is a key example of North German Brick Gothic architecture; the Niederfinow Boat Lift is Germany’s oldest still-operating boat lift. Brick architecture and engineering structures offer different cultural highlights. The Ice Age Geopark at the edge of the Oder Valley extends across the Uckermark and Barnim districts in northeastern Brandenburg.
Barnim also offers its own setting for cycling and hiking: cycling in Barnim Nature Park is an activity for visitors in the district, whose cycle route network totals 610 kilometers. The “Around the Schorfheide” circular hiking trail passes through Barnim Nature Park and is 143 kilometers long. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out on a specific hike. Barnim has numerous lakes for swimming and relaxation. Boat trips around the lake are offered on Lake Werbellin, and canoe tours are possible on the Finow Canal. The Finow Canal is Germany’s oldest still-navigable artificial waterway.
