A break in Pfofeld brings together a variety of interests: Roman traces, architectural history, nature and leisure by the water. When looking for a hotel in Pfofeld, your priorities can help guide your choice: should the trip focus mainly on Roman history and the church, or on nature and activities by the lake? The municipality offers attractions for both.

Roman traces and routes

The former Roman Limes runs from east to west across the municipality of Pfofeld; its route through the municipal area is about four kilometres long. The Limes Trail around Pfofeld leads to Roman traces in the municipal districts of Pfofeld and Theilenhofen. Notable stops include the Roman bath near Theilenhofen and the partially reconstructed Limes tower near Rittern. These two places are clearly distinct from Pfofeld, but are among the destinations named along the route.

An information board at the partially reconstructed Roman bath provides details about the monuments. A further 13 information boards stand along the Limes-Roman Bath circular hiking trail. This means the information on site complements the Roman traces revealed by the route through the municipal districts. The course of the Limes through the municipality and the individual named stops offer two distinct ways to explore the region’s Roman history.

St Michael’s Church and the boundary procession

Another historical highlight is St Michael’s Church in Pfofeld. It was built from sandstone around 1130. The chancel and nave contain Gothic frescoes from the 15th century, which were only uncovered again after the Second World War. The church’s construction and its frescoes therefore belong to different periods: visitors can explore both its early origins and its later decoration.

The traditional boundary procession also plays a part in the town’s cultural life. It takes place every twelve years and follows the boundaries of the fields. Anyone wishing to attend should check the specific event date before travelling.

Nature, cycling and activities by the water

Numerous fruit trees and blackthorn hedges line the path at Langlauer Buck. The area lies within a nature reserve with calcareous grassland. The nature-focused Langlauer Buck adventure playground is also located here, with a hedge tunnel, seesaw, hillside slide and cloud swing. The play equipment is available for use; its facilities may change over time. The landscape and the playground offer different reasons to spend time outdoors here.

A cycle path connects Pfofeld and Langlau and is passable as far as Dornhausen. In addition, a tunnel at the Rehenbühl roundabout in the municipality allows people to cross State Road 2222 safely.

The Langlau lakeside centre is also among the leisure options in the municipal area. There, a wide sandy beach offers plenty of space on a green sunbathing lawn; the water entry is shallow, and the beach is freely accessible. Swimming, sailing, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, pedal boating and minigolf are popular leisure activities by the lake. Alongside the Limes, church and nature, this offers a distinct focus for a trip centred on activities by the water.
