Gunzenhausen combines Roman history in its historic town centre with cycling routes that start here. If you are considering Gunzenhausen as a place to stay, the main question is whether culture, cycling or green open spaces should sway your decision. The town and the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination offer a range of ways to explore these interests.

Roman traces in the town centre

The Gunzenhausen Archaeological Museum explores the Romans on the Limes, everyday Roman life, the Mithras sanctuary and the Early Middle Ages. It is located in the historic town centre, close to the market square and Blasturm. The museum’s exhibits therefore cover topics ranging from Roman history to the Early Middle Ages.

The Evangelical Lutheran town church of St. Mary also stands at a site with a Roman past. From 150 to 240 AD, a Roman fort stood on what is now the church square. It served to protect the Limes and the Altmühl ford and was destroyed by the Alamanni. The Way of St. James, which leads from Nuremberg via Abenberg to Nördlingen and Ulm, also passes by the church.

Cycling routes at different scales

The Altmühltal Cycle Route starts in Gunzenhausen. The 31-kilometre section of the Limes Cycle Route to Weißenburg also begins here. There are more than 800 kilometres of marked cycling routes around Gunzenhausen. This means that a precisely specified section and a larger network of cycling routes in the area are both available.

When planning, it is worth considering each route and its length separately: the Limes Cycle Route section runs to Weißenburg, while the Altmühltal Cycle Route is part of a longer connection through the Altmühltal Nature Park. The Sculpture Trail offers another way to explore the outdoors, running from the Gunzenhausen Promenade to Lake Altmühl.

Green spaces and trails

The Altmühlaue is a green recreation area in Gunzenhausen. An observation platform there offers views over a stork habitat. The Altmühlaue is also home to “Platz für Alle” (A Place for Everyone), an accessible playground designed for all generations. These features appeal to different interests without having to be combined in one place.

In Burgstallwald, designated walking paths lead to Roman remains from the 2nd century AD. At sites in and around Gunzenhausen with traces of the Limes and the Romans, there are also information boards on site. Those wishing to combine culture and walking can therefore find specific points of Roman interest both in the town centre and in the surrounding area.

Church culture and Franconian cuisine

St. Mary’s town church has around 1,200 seats. It hosts the main Sunday service, numerous special services and most of the town’s church music events. The programme may change.

The Gunzenhausen bratwurst is part of the local food culture: a Franconian delicacy, it features on the menus of many inns in town. Menus may change, but the bratwurst remains a distinct local speciality to look out for when choosing somewhere to eat.

In the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination

The Limes runs for around 40 kilometres across the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. Longer routes give the region a broader scale, too: the 200-kilometre Altmühltal Panorama Trail follows the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the Altmühltal Nature Park. The Altmühltal Cycle Route also runs through the nature park for around 160 kilometres, from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim. The two routes differ in activity and length.

Another option on the water is the Altmühl boating route. It is just under 120 kilometres long between Gunzenhausen and Dietfurt/Töging; conditions for boating may vary by season. Lake Altmühl lies northwest of Gunzenhausen and is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. Conditions and local restrictions may vary.
