The W2 circular trail leads through the Illach Gorge to the Mühlegg viewpoint; the Nordic walking centre’s routes range from 4.9 to 14.5 kilometres. There are also cross-country ski trails, cycle paths and historic sites. This lets you choose local activities according to your interests and available time.
Alpine Foothills Scenery and Panoramic Views
Wildsteig is situated in the hilly Alpine foothills at the watershed between the Ammer and Lech rivers. From here, there are views of the Ammergau Alps, the Allgäu, the Blue Land and the Lechrain. These four regions provide a broad panorama; you can also explore the landscape itself along a variety of routes.
Hiking and Nordic Walking
The W2 circular trail starts at the car park opposite the bakery in Wildsteig and leads through the Illach Gorge to the MĂĽhlegg viewpoint. It is about 8.5 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of approximately 2.5 hours. As trail conditions can change seasonally, check them before setting out.
A longer alternative is the W4 circular trail. It starts at the car park by the community hall, passes the Wieskirche and returns to Wildsteig. The 11.5-kilometre route takes about three hours to walk. Compared with the W2, the W4 is around three kilometres longer, with an estimated walking time about half an hour greater. This can help you choose a route based on how much time you have available.
The Wildsteig Nordic Walking Centre offers routes of 4.9, 8.5, 10.5 and 14.5 kilometres. Check the current route locally before using it.
Cycling and Winter Sports
The Lake Constance–Königssee Cycle Route and the Ammer–Amper Cycle Route pass through Wildsteig. For minor repairs, there is a bicycle repair station at Pilgerhaus Wildsteig, Kirchbergstraße 25, equipped with a pump, hanging brackets and various tools. If you plan to rely on the station, check locally that it is operational.
In winter, the cross-country trail network covers about 22 kilometres, with classic and skating tracks. As the trails are groomed by volunteers, they are not always all prepared. The 5.0-kilometre Trail 2 forms a loop between Schwaig and Unterhäusern and is also suitable for beginners. This general limitation on trail grooming is important to bear in mind when planning your visit.

Grotto Complex, Church and Pilgrim House
The Lourdes Grotto in Wildsteig is considered the largest grotto complex in southern Germany. It underwent extensive renovation from 2019 to 2022. The parish church also has historic significance: Provost Ambrosius commissioned new furnishings, and the church was given an elegant tower. The work was completed in 1785.
