In Steingaden, architectural history and living traditions go hand in hand with a variety of ways to explore the surrounding area. The Welfenmünster and Wieskirche are notable cultural highlights; four interactive themed trails explore the monastery’s history and other places. In winter, trails for classic cross-country skiing and skating add to the options. When planning your stay, consider whether architecture, a particular festival or getting active on the winter trails should be your main focus.

Monastic History at the Welfenmünster

The Welfenmünster is Steingaden’s former monastery church. Its architecture brings together artistic and architectural periods ranging from Romanesque to modern. The church also has a Gothic cloister, which provides a distinct architectural feature alongside this broad span of time. Visitors interested in architectural history will find both a stylistic record spanning centuries and a clearly identifiable Gothic element.

The Wieskirche: Rococo and UNESCO World Heritage

The Wieskirche is in the Wies district near Steingaden. Dominikus Zimmermann built the Rococo church between 1745 and 1754; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. These dates provide a historical context for your visit without limiting the church to the period in which it was built: visitors can also attend services and, in summer, listen to concerts. Individual dates may vary. If a service or concert is important to your plans, check the current schedule in advance.

Themed Trails and Monastery Garden

Four interactive themed trails lead to special places and share information about Steingaden’s monastic history, the Brettleweg and the Wieskirche. They include a mixed-reality guide from Locandy. Before making plans, check whether the Locandy guide is currently available.

The St. Johannes Monastery Garden is another cultural highlight. Its features include a Gothic labyrinth and medicinal plants that can be experienced with all the senses. The garden thus offers two distinct ways to explore: the form of a historic labyrinth and a sensory encounter with plants. Together with the Welfenmünster and the themed trails, it puts the focus on monastic history, architecture and garden culture.

Traditions Throughout the Year

Several recurring customs provide a clear connection to the calendar when planning a visit. Every year on Whit Monday, the traditional costume groups of the Oberer Lechgau Association hold a pilgrimage to the miraculous image of the Scourged Savior at the Wieskirche. Afterwards, the Wies traditional costume groups and marksmen invite pilgrims and visitors to a garden festival. The pilgrimage and festival are part of the same event, bringing together religious tradition and socializing.

On Corpus Christi, a traditional procession takes place through the streets of the former monastery village of Steingaden after the festive service at the Welfenmünster. On May 1, a blue-and-white painted maypole is erected and decorated with figures representing tradition and crafts. A May festival with music and dancing follows. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these traditions, use the relevant date as a starting point and check the specific event times in advance.

Winter Trails: Classic or Skating

A cross-country ski trail for classic skiing starts at Grubfeldweg. It runs via Lauterbach, Deutensee and Maderbichl back to Steingaden. Another trail starts at Gagras, runs via Litzau to the skating loop in Langau near the Wieskirche, and passes through a landscape the municipality describes as idyllic. There is also a shorter skating loop starting at Kissingerfeld.

The trails differ in their stated skiing technique, starting points and routes: the trail at Grubfeldweg is described as suitable for classic skiing, while the trails starting at Gagras and Kissingerfeld are skating options. The right choice depends in part on which technique you prefer and which starting point works for your plans. Winter conditions and trail grooming may vary by season, so check conditions before setting out.
