In Polling, church art, exhibitions and seasonal art events come with different visiting conditions. The Collegiate Church of St. Salvator and the Fischerbau each have their own highlights: regular concerts are held at the church, while an installation at the Fischerbau can only be seen from October to April and by prior arrangement. If you want to plan your trip around a particular art or music event, it is worth taking the relevant conditions into account early in your planning.

Collegiate Church: Works of Art and Concerts

In Polling’s Collegiate Church of St. Salvator, a 1526 statue of the Virgin Mary sits on the chancel arch opposite the pulpit, which dates from 1705. The two dates refer to different works of art in the church: the pulpit is from the early 18th century, while the statue is from the 16th century. Looking at the furnishings, you can therefore note a specific difference in date rather than viewing the works as a unified design from a single period.

Regular concerts featuring renowned organists from Germany and abroad are held in the collegiate church. If you want to include music in your stay, check a specific concert date in advance: the regular concerts do not by themselves establish whether a performance will take place during your travel dates. This presents a different planning question from the art event at the Fischerbau, for which a period and the need for a prior arrangement are specified.

Exhibitions and Art at the Fischerbau

The Fischerbau has been used for exhibitions since 2003. It is also home to the Dreamhouse by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela. If you are planning to visit this work, check current access arrangements in advance.

Dan Flavin’s blue-and-red installation “untitled 1970” can also be seen at the Fischerbau, at Weilheimer Str. 12–14, 82398 Polling. Visits are possible from October to April by prior arrangement by telephone or email. If this particular installation is an important reason for your trip, plan your visit for this period and arrange it in advance by telephone or email. At the collegiate church, by contrast, the main consideration is finding a specific concert date.

Places in the Centre and Nearby

The Polling Museum is in the town centre; the Heilig Kreuz Monastery is located in the centre of Polling. The STOA169 Hall is nearby, around 2 km from the town centre. This distance should be taken as an approximate guide and distinguishes the hall’s location from the descriptions of the museum and monastery.

Group tours are offered at the Minis-Raritäten-Stadl. Coffee and homemade cake can be included on request. This is an offering for groups, not a general tour service. If you are planning a tour with a group or would like to include refreshments, confirm the relevant arrangements with the venue in advance.

Regional Context: Weilheim-Schongau

The Pfaffenwinkel travel region lies within the wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau. The waterways also help orient you to the region: the Lech forms the western boundary of Weilheim-Schongau, the Ammer flows through its central area, and the Loisach runs along its eastern boundary. These geographical features describe Weilheim-Schongau as a wider regional context.

The Wieskirche is located near Steingaden and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Dominikus Zimmermann built it between 1745 and 1754. Visitors come for services, summer concerts and quiet contemplation; check current dates in advance if you have a specific service or concert in mind.

Raisting and HohenpeiĂźenberg offer other distinct points of interest within the wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau. The approximately 5-kilometre Erdfunkstelle hiking trail starts at Raisting station. This circular route passes through the satellite communications station, by large satellite dishes and the Radom industrial monument with its historic Antenna 1. In winter, the approximately 7-kilometre Filzloipe trail in HohenpeiĂźenberg is groomed for skating and classic cross-country skiing; its availability depends on winter conditions.

The difference is clear when choosing regional activities: the route in Raisting combines a circular trail with satellite dishes and an industrial monument, while the trail in HohenpeiĂźenberg is a seasonal option for two styles of cross-country skiing. This lets you distinguish cultural and landscape attractions across the wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau without attributing them to Polling itself.
