Hohenpeißenberg lies at the foot of the 988 m-high Hohen Peißenberg. Different themes are at the heart of a stay here: pilgrimage and hiking trails, the history of coal mining, the pilgrimage church with its historic ensemble, moorland and winter sports. The trails have different starting points and focus areas. When planning your time here, you can therefore choose according to your interests rather than treating all the destinations as a single route.
Discover trails and landscapes
The König-Ludwig Hiking and Cycling Trail and the Way of St. James cross Hohenpeißenberg. The multi-day Holy Landscape Pfaffenwinkel pilgrimage hiking trail also begins on the Hohen Peißenberg. This means different routes come together here: two trails pass through the town, while a pilgrimage trail starts on the mountain.
The Stollenweg leads from Peißenberg to Hohenpeißenberg, passing former coal-mining tunnels that were in use from 1837 to 1971. This educational trail focuses on mining, geology and the landscape, with 15 information panels along the way. It thus combines exploring a specific landscape with learning about the area's mining history.
The 6 km-long Schwarzlaichmoor themed trail offers a different focus. Information boards guide you through the adjacent moorland; the trail starts at the Hetten inn. Here, the moorland and the information provided along the way take centre stage. The Filzloipe, meanwhile, is about 7 km long and is groomed in winter for skating and classic cross-country skiing. It runs along the edge of the Schwarzlaichmoor nature reserve; grooming may vary depending on conditions.
The two trails offer different ways to plan your visit: the themed trail explores the moor with information boards, while the ski trail is a seasonal cross-country route. Their lengths also differ: the themed trail is 6 km long, while the ski trail is about 7 km. If you plan a winter activity, be sure to take trail conditions into account.
Pilgrimage Church, Chapel and Observatory
The historic pilgrimage ensemble on the Hohen Peißenberg includes the Church of the Assumption of Mary, the Chapel of Grace and the canons' house. The pilgrimage church preserves a pulpit dating from 1619 and carved gallery fronts. The carving on these gallery fronts is considered a rarity of Bavarian church art. The Chapel of Grace of Our Lady houses a late Gothic image of grace and Rococo furnishings with gold ornamentation. Its carved statue of the Madonna came from a palace chapel in Schongau.
The meteorological observatory on the Hohen Peißenberg offers another perspective on the mountain's history: uninterrupted weather records have been kept there since 1781. Church art and weather observation offer different points of interest, but both are closely connected with the Hohen Peißenberg. This allows you to complement the town's cultural side with a scientific topic, without conflating it with another route through the valley.
More destinations to help plan your stay
The swimming lake in Hohenpeißenberg has sunbathing lawns, a kiosk, a beach volleyball court, play equipment, benches and a natural pond. It adds a place to relax by the water to the hiking and cultural attractions. You can take its various amenities into account when planning, depending on your interests.
Weilheim-Schongau as the wider region
The wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau is located in the Pfaffenwinkel travel region. The district is bordered by the Lech to the west, the Ammer flows through its central area, and the Loisach runs along its eastern boundary. This regional overview complements Hohenpeißenberg's local attractions without attributing the rivers or other features of the district to the town itself.
