The Schlössleweg is a historical trail through Memmingerberg. It is about three kilometres long, includes a somewhat steeper climb and can be shortened. Its length, the climb and the option to shorten the route provide concrete points of reference for planning your own walk. If you want to walk the entire trail, you can take the climb into account; if you prefer a shorter walk, you can shorten the route.

Buildings and historical traces in Memmingerberg

The Zehentstadel is the oldest surviving building in the town. It was built in 1545 on the site of a moated castle belonging to Wernher von Berg. This means that two historical layers come together here: the surviving barn and the moated castle that once stood on this site.

The Rotes Schlössle tells a different architectural story. It was built in 1776 as a country residence for the von Unold family and is a two-storey hipped-roof building with projecting bays, a volute gable and a risalit façade. A hipped roof has sloping roof surfaces on the gable ends as well. The risalit façade refers to a design with projecting sections of the building; the volute gable adds another architectural accent.

The Friedsaul marks the boundary of the former Memmingen high court jurisdiction. It is therefore linked to a historical boundary. In St. Ambrosius Church, the furnishings form an artistically valuable ensemble in the style of the 1960s. An altar cross by artist Erich Schickling continues to define the interior today. Memmingerberg thus brings together a variety of themes: architectural history, historical territorial boundaries and the design of a church interior.

The wider travel destination of Unterallgäu

In the wider travel destination of Unterallgäu, the Iller to the west and the Wertach to the east form natural boundaries. Regional accessibility is supported by the A7 and A96 motorways, a dense road network, rail connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg. For your own journey, it is advisable to check suitable connections in advance. Cycling and hiking trails throughout the district are signposted consistently; Unterallgäu also has the Glückswege trails.

The nature trails each offer something different. The 3.2-kilometre forest discovery trail in Bad Grönenbach introduces visitors to the forest ecosystem. The Buxheim forest discovery trail runs for 2.7 kilometres around the Buxheimer Weiher and is designed to let visitors experience nature with all their senses. In the Bannwald forest in Ottobeuren, eleven stations lead along the forest discovery trail. Another point of interest in Unterallgäu is the Benninger Ried, which is easy to walk through and has its own educational trail and viewing platform. Details about distance, stations and facilities provide different points of reference when choosing a nature trail.

For culture enthusiasts, the Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren and Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim are among the important historic buildings in Unterallgäu. Fugger Castle in Kirchheim has the world-famous Cedar Hall, while the former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls. In Bad Wörishofen, the Sebastian Kneipp Museum in the east wing of the monastery documents the life and work of the famous priest with more than 2,000 exhibits. Bad Wörishofen is one of Unterallgäu’s Kneipp health resorts, while Ottobeuren is a Kneipp spa resort.

If you are visiting seasonally, it is also worth checking the specific opening times: the courtyard of Mindelburg Castle is accessible all year round, while the keep, which has been converted into a viewing tower, is open from April to October. Check seasonal access times before your visit. For food lovers, the Culinary Mile in Bad Wörishofen is a special event: it takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn, with freshly prepared food at numerous tasting stalls. The food on offer may vary by date; check event dates when planning your trip.
