Winklmoos-Alm is a skiing and hiking area and also a district of Reit im Winkl. It is also certified as an International Dark Sky Park. Other highlights range from cross-country skiing at Nordic Park to trails by Hausbach Waterfall and insights into the town’s history. This means you can choose between sporting, scenic and cultural themes for your stay.
Winklmoos-Alm and cross-country skiing
Winklmoos-Alm brings together two designated activities: skiing and hiking. Its certification as an International Dark Sky Park adds another distinctive natural feature to its sporting appeal. Nordic Park Reit im Winkl has a play, training and practice area for cross-country skiing enthusiasts. The “Bärenloipe” is the children’s trail at Nordic Park. The Alm and Nordic Park are therefore associated with different activities, and the Bärenloipe is designated there as a dedicated children’s trail.
Hausbach Waterfall, via ferrata and walking trails
Hausbach Waterfall is a small landmark of Reit im Winkl. The Hausbach Waterfall via ferrata runs along the right side of the gorge. It is graded C/D and leads over ladders, footholds and a rope bridge. Conditions can change depending on the water level—an important point when planning a tour. The grade and route clearly distinguish the via ferrata from a leisurely walk.
One such walk follows the Maria-Hellwig-Weg. It is dedicated to Maria Hellwig, a singer and performer in rural theatre from Reit im Winkl. Between the town centre and the waterfall, there is also the barefoot park, with a pond of water lilies, Kneipp pools and numerous original stations. The walking trail and park offer different experiences from the gorge section of the via ferrata.
The Three Lakes Area
The Three Lakes Area, with Weitsee, Mittersee and Lödensee, stretches between Reit im Winkl and Ruhpolding. Swimming is permitted at designated spots on Weitsee, subject to seasonal conditions. The area’s location between the two towns makes it a distinct regional landscape to consider when planning your trip.
Museums, traditional evening and church
At the “Hausenhäusl” local history museum, you can learn about the life of a day labourer in Reit im Winkl just over 100 years ago. The ski museum shows the importance of Reit im Winkl and Winklmoos-Alm to the sport of skiing. Museum visits are only possible as part of a guided museum tour; advance registration is required.
At traditional evenings in the festival hall, you can experience music, singing, dancing and traditional costume. Check the local calendar for dates during your stay. Another cultural highlight is the Roman Catholic branch church of St. Johann im Gebirg on Winklmoos-Alm near Reit im Winkl. Prof. Josef Wiedemann built the modern church between 1963 and 1966.
A connection to the gondola
For guests of the Winklmoos-Alm/Steinplatte gondola, a free shuttle bus runs from the Tourist Information Office and other stops in Reit im Winkl directly to the gondola’s valley station in Seegatterl. Check the current shuttle service before travelling.
