The Archaeological Museum and the Gredl Cycle Path offer different highlights in Thalmässing: hands-on activities for children and young people and an interactive 3D landscape relief contrast with a cycling route along a former railway line. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay on archaeology or cycling.
Hands-on archaeology and an overview
In the children's area of the Archaeological Museum, children and young people can explore a walk-in burial chamber and trace Celtic ornaments. This brings together two hands-on activities: exploring a space and tracing designs. If you are travelling with children or young people, you can plan your museum visit around these activities. Check the museum's current opening arrangements before planning.
Another highlight is the interactive 3D landscape relief. It provides information about hilltop settlements, central places, rural settlements and raw materials used in the past. Unlike the children's area, which offers specific activities, the relief draws attention to settlement types and materials from earlier times. The museum therefore offers different ways to explore archaeological topics.
Cycling on the Gredl Cycle Path
The Gredl Cycle Path follows a former railway line through the heart of Thalmässing. It is about 30 kilometres long, easy to follow and has few inclines. Its length and route characteristics give you concrete points of reference when planning a cycling trip. You can decide whether cycling should be the main focus of your trip; plan your time according to your own pace.
More things to do in the Roth travel destination
The Gredl-Express 636 offers another way to explore the Roth travel destination: this leisure bus route runs from Hilpoltstein via Thalmässing and Greding to Kinding and back. Along the way, it passes numerous sights in the Roth district, including half-timbered villages, Baroque and Rococo buildings, and museums with archaeological finds. The route may change seasonally, so check the current service before travelling.
For a comparison of longer cycling routes, the Roth travel destination also offers the “RH hoch 2” circular cycle route. It follows the district boundaries, loops around the entire Roth district and is more than 200 kilometres long. This makes it possible to distinguish between a route of about 30 kilometres through Thalmässing and a district-wide circular tour by their length, without treating them as one continuous route.
The Rothsee covers 210 hectares and lies between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg. In the Roth travel destination, the Rothsee Environmental Education Centre offers year-round guided tours tailored to age and ability for school classes, kindergarten groups, people with disabilities and visitor groups. During school holidays and at weekends, there is an open programme for children and families; families can also explore the centre independently. Check the operator's information for current dates.
The DATEV Challenge Roth is also a regular triathlon event in the summer season in the Roth district. If you want to plan your trip around it, check event dates and participation details separately.
