A nearly completely preserved town wall with 21 towers, archaeological finds and trails through the surrounding area reveal the many facets of Greding. When planning your trip, you can consider the historic sights, outdoor activities and the date of the folk festival separately. This lets you choose whether to focus on the town’s history, hiking, cycling or a recurring event date.
Old Town, Basilica and Hunting Lodge
Greding’s Old Town has a nearly completely preserved town wall with 21 towers. St. Martin’s Basilica offers another glimpse into the town’s history: it was built in the mid-12th century. Its Late Gothic high altar was created around 1480 and depicts Christ on the Cross. The construction period and the altar belong to different chapters in the basilica’s history.
The former prince-bishop’s hunting lodge on Greding’s market square also has a specific history. Court architect Jakob Engel built it under Prince-Bishop Johann Euchar Schenk von Castell (1685–1697). The town fortifications, basilica and hunting lodge thus offer different historical themes to explore, without requiring you to combine them into a single walking tour.
Archaeology and the World of the Bavarians
The Greding Archaeology Museum displays finds from archaeological excavations in Großhöbing and the town of Greding. A tour of the Early Medieval section takes one to one and a half hours and introduces visitors to the world of the Bavarians. They settled in the Schwarzach Valley nearly 1,500 years ago. If you plan a museum visit as part of your trip, this offers a clearly defined focus in terms of time and a connection to the early history of the Schwarzach Valley.
Hiking, Cycling and a Park on the Edge of Town
The Adolf-Hackner-Weg trail takes you along some particularly scenic sections of Greding’s hiking trails. Local trails around Greding pass natural beauty spots and cultural attractions. Another option is the Schwarzachtal Panorama Trail, a loop trail that connects with the long-distance Altmühltal Panorama Trail. The trails therefore differ in their stated purpose: the Adolf-Hackner-Weg leads along sections of Greding’s hiking trails, while the Schwarzachtal Panorama Trail connects to the long-distance trail.
Greding is also a starting point for cycling tours, which are described as varied. At the Eichstätt Gate, the Heinrich-Herold-Anlage offers a different kind of experience: this park by the town wall includes a modern children’s playground and a water play area. It is open to the public at all times. Alongside hiking and cycling, you can therefore choose a freely accessible park and specific play facilities.
Folk Festival on a Recurring Date
The Greding folk festival is held every year on the fourth weekend in July; the exact calendar dates vary from year to year. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth checking the event dates for the relevant year. The festival features brass band music and performances by show bands, as well as an amusement park for children and adults. This makes the festival date different from activities such as exploring local history, hiking and cycling, which can be planned throughout the year: the folk festival follows a recurring weekend schedule.
In the broader Roth destination
The broader Roth destination also offers further ways to expand your trip with other themes. In the broader Roth destination, Lake Rothsee covers 210 hectares and lies between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg. In the broader Roth destination, the “RH hoch 2” cycling circuit follows the district boundaries around the entire district of Roth and is more than 200 kilometres long. This tour is a separate, large-scale option alongside the varied cycling tours for which Greding serves as a starting point.
The Gredl-Express 636 runs from Hilpoltstein via Thalmässing and Greding to Kinding and back. Along the way, it passes numerous attractions in the district of Roth, including half-timbered villages, Baroque and Rococo buildings, and museums with archaeological finds. As the route may change seasonally, check the current route before travelling. You can thus treat this connection as a separate part of your trip planning, without equating it with local hiking or cycling tours.
