Neubeuern combines a historic market square with exhibitions, a lake for bathing and swimming, and routes for hiking and cycling. There are options for a range of interests: architecture and Lüftlmalerei (traditional façade painting) characterise the market square, the cultural centre brings together a museum and gallery, while the lake and trails put outdoor activities centre stage. When planning your trip, the key question is not which single programme to choose, but whether to focus on culture, water or a particular route.

Market Square and Local Culture

Neubeuern’s historic market square can be accessed via the Salzburg Gate to the southeast and the Munich Gate to the northwest. The rows of houses around the square are decorated with colourful Lüftlmalerei, making their façades one of the most striking features of the historic market square.

The museum in the Kulturhaus im Markt features a fossil exhibition. Other exhibitions focus on Inn river shipping, the Neubeuern Choir Community under Enoch zu Guttenberg, Neubeuern Castle and the V.T.E.V. “Edelweiß” Neubeuern. This offers a choice of varied subjects, from natural finds and shipping to music, the castle and the association. The Galerie am Markt, in the same cultural centre, regularly shows contemporary art by artists who live in Neubeuern as well as guest artists. The museum and gallery therefore have different focuses: the gallery highlights contemporary art, while the museum brings together several subjects. Museum visitor arrangements may change with the seasons; check the latest information when planning a visit.

Lake, Hiking Trails and Cycling

Lake Neubeuern offers swimming and bathing for families, as well as a large sunbathing lawn. Seasonal operations may vary; check the latest conditions if swimming is a key part of your outing. Two beach volleyball courts add to the facilities: one is intended for children and the other for adults. Sunbathing, swimming and beach volleyball can each be a different focus of a visit to the lake.

There are several options for hikers. The circular hike around Neubeuern Castle takes about two hours and passes, among other places, the remains of Althaus Castle. The estimated duration provides a guide for planning your time, while the castle ruins are one of the route’s destinations. Wolfsschlucht is also a stop on the Neubeuern Schiffleut hiking trail. These two hiking options have different points of interest: the circular route links Neubeuern Castle with the remains of Althaus Castle, while the Schiffleut hiking trail includes a stop at Wolfsschlucht.

There is also a specific option for cycling: the Inn Cycle Path passes by Neubeuern. This gives you two different ways to include outdoor activity in your travel plans when weighing up hiking and cycling.

Getting There and Parking

Neubeuern is accessible via the BRB Chiemgau-Inntal railway, with connections through Rosenheim or Raubling stations, as well as by bus routes 9490 and 9572. As transport connections can change, check the latest timetables before travelling. If arriving by car, free parking is available at the P1 municipal car park next to the town hall at SchlossstraĂźe 4. The car park is about 200 metres from the historic market square; local parking conditions may also change.

More to Explore in the Wider Rosenheim Destination

The wider Rosenheim destination offers more cultural and landscape experiences. The museum at Amerang Castle provides insights into castle architecture and the history of the noble family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum, run by the District of Upper Bavaria, showcases farmhouses, craft buildings and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. The Amerang Open-Air Museum offers private guided tours and group activities; advance arrangements may be necessary.

The Moorlehrpfad (moorland educational trail), established in 2010, lies between Amerang and Halfing. It explains how the moorland landscape formed after the Ice Age and introduces the local flora and fauna. It offers a distinct focus on landscape and natural history within the wider Rosenheim destination.
