The Büchlberg observation tower combines sweeping panoramic views with clearly identified compass directions. From its 25 m-high platform, the 360-degree panorama extends south to the Alps and the Dachstein massif; to the north, you can see the main peaks of the Bavarian Forest, including Rachel, Lusen and Dreisessel. The tower is on the “Büchlberger eight” hiking trail.
Landscape and Views
The former quarry offers a different landscape: it now contains a deep lake. The old quarry is designated as a landscape conservation area and is intended to be preserved as an extensive natural monument. The panoramic view from the tower and the lake in the former quarry thus represent different aspects of the Büchlberg landscape.
Cycling in Büchlberg
The municipality’s cycling options include the Büchlberg Mill Cycling Route, the Chapel Cycling Route, “Around Büchlberg,” the Denkhof mountain biking loop and the Lichtenau mountain biking loop. Two of the named routes are specifically designated as mountain biking loops.
The bike park in Büchlberg offers tables, kickers and a pump track across approximately 2,000 m² for practising, trying things out and watching. Together, the practice facility and the named cycling routes and loops offer different ways to spend time on a bike. Free e-bike rentals are also available to holidaymakers and local residents. Check availability before your trip.
Getting Around Locally
The entrance to the Bergholz motor skills park is through the community garden behind the town hall. The route follows Carl-Kerber-Straße to the turning circle and then continues to the entrance to Bergholz.
Büchlberg lies 15 km north of Passau, the city of three rivers, and can be reached via the B12. At the Museum Musikleben Büchlberg, the Erlau-Stub’n can be used as a stage for musicians and singers. The events programme may vary.
More Destinations in the Wider Passau Destination
The wider Passau destination has more cultural and natural attractions. The Bavarian Forest Open-Air Museum in Tittling is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. On 20 hectares, you can visit more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890. The museum village includes farmsteads, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels, field monuments and Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666.
While the museum village focuses on historic buildings, the Haus am Strom nature experience centre is located in the narrow Bavarian-Austrian Danube valley, downstream from Untergriesbach. In the Passau destination, the two places showcase different cultural and natural themes.
There are also different focuses among the routes: the Danube Cycle Path runs through the Passau region and received a four-star rating following an inspection by the German Cyclists’ Association. As its certification status may change, check the current rating before planning your trip. Hiking routes in the Passau region include the Granite Adventure Trail around Hauzenberg and the Smugglers’ Trail in the Danube Pearls.
Other regional attractions include the widely known thermal springs in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. Ortenburg Castle Culture is an events series organised by the Friends of Ortenburg Castle. From April to December, it features music events, cabaret performances, spooky nights at Ortenburg Castle, talks and guided tours; check dates by season.
