In Ronsberg, the medieval castle ruins and a chapel on the castle hill offer glimpses into different eras. Nearby, the Teufelsküche geotope adds a distinctive feature to the landscape: large, wildly stacked blocks shape the valley of the eastern Günz. When planning your trip, you can thus distinguish between local history, a natural monument and other destinations in the wider Ostallgäu region.

Castle Hill, Chapel and Castle Ruins

At Friedhofweg 2 on Castle Hill, a Catholic chapel dating from the 18th century stands beside the cemetery wall. The small rectangular building has a gabled roof. Its simple design and location beside the cemetery wall make the chapel a tangible historical landmark in Ronsberg.

This is distinct from the medieval castle ruins of Ronsberg Castle. Medieval and early modern finds have also been discovered in the area of the former castle chapel; a modern cemetery is located there. The 18th-century chapel and the area of the former castle chapel therefore represent different historical contexts. Anyone interested in local history will find both a small surviving building and archaeological traces of earlier use here.

TeufelskĂĽche and Winter Planning

The TeufelskĂĽche geotope lies in the valley of the eastern GĂĽnz, around two kilometres beyond Ronsberg. Its large blocks consist of consolidated glacial gravels and are stacked haphazardly on top of one another. The geotope is designated a natural monument. Please stay on the paths. A visit combines views of the striking rock formation with a practical reminder about protecting the site.

In winter, Ronsberg offers a different kind of outing: when snow conditions are suitable, the slope at the ski and children’s lift is snow-covered and groomed. Snow conditions are decisive. Before visiting, check whether the lift is currently operating; possible snowmaking and grooming do not guarantee that it is open.

For cycling in the wider region, the Günztal Cycle Path runs from Günzach in the Ostallgäu to Günzburg, where the Günz flows into the Danube. The route is around 92 kilometres long in total. This is a different kind of outing from Ronsberg’s local destinations: the cycle path is a longer regional connection with named endpoints, not simply another place in town.

The Wider Ostallgäu Destination

The wider Ostallgäu destination encompasses landscapes ranging from the mountains in the southwest, which belong to the Vilser Mountains, to the Ammer Mountains in the southeast. At 2,082 metres, the Hochplatte is the highest mountain in the Ostallgäu. This context helps you see the region’s landscape as a distinct setting alongside Ronsberg’s local destinations.

Cycling and hiking opportunities are also organised regionally: the Ostallgäu Cycling Travel Region comprises themed regional routes, consistently signposted and ranging from 25 to 76 kilometres each. The Ostallgäu also has 32 local hiking routes that showcase special natural and cultural treasures. The lengths of the regional cycle routes and the approximately 92-kilometre Günztal Cycle Path offer different scales for planning, without implying that any particular route passes through Ronsberg.

For culture enthusiasts, Neuschwanstein Castle has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Linderhof Palace, the Royal House on Schachen and Herrenchiemsee Palace since 12 July 2025. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Royal Castles can only be visited as part of a guided tour. In ObergĂĽnzburg, the South Sea Collection, alongside the local history museum, now displays more than 1,500 everyday and cultural objects.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Ronsberg, it is worth organising your excursion plans by these geographical levels: the chapel and castle ruins are in town, the Teufelsküche is nearby, and other cycling, hiking and cultural attractions belong to the wider Ostallgäu region. This way, you can first decide whether local history, the natural monument or a regional theme will be the focus of your stay.
