Get to know Oberostendorf through tangible evidence of its local history, including the historic details at the Unterer Wirt, the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, and the local history room in Gutenberg. Each offers a different focus on inn history, religious imagery, and craftsmanship. Please note that visits to the local history room are available on request.

Historic details at the Unterer Wirt

The inn sign of the Unterer Wirt and the wooden ceiling in its dining room date from the second half of the 18th century and have been preserved unchanged. This connects two distinct parts of the inn to the same period: a sign and the design of the dining room. Their state of preservation is as much a part of the building’s history as their date.

A depiction of Jesus and the Samaritan woman, with the words “Give me a drink,” is on the south exterior wall. The old inscription “Praise be to Jesus Christ” is on the east side. Both elements express the spiritual connection between the inn and the parish church. The references to the south and east sides help distinguish the image from the inscription; together, they add religious imagery to the historic features of the building.

Church architecture and craftsmanship in Gutenberg

The original building of the parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Oberostendorf dates from the second half of the 15th century. Compared with the sign and wooden ceiling at the Unterer Wirt, which date from the second half of the 18th century, the church points to an earlier period of construction. The local history thus encompasses different periods, and these historic features do not all share the same historical focus.

The local history room in Gutenberg houses numerous old items from the area, including a valuable, complete shoemaker’s workshop from an earlier period. The workshop gives the collection a specific focus on craftsmanship; the other objects represent further aspects of local history. If you would like to plan a visit, please enquire in advance: visits are available on request.

The wider travel region of Ostallgäu

The wider travel destination of Ostallgäu broadens the view to regional landscapes and attractions. In the southwest, the mountains in Ostallgäu district are part of the Vilser Gebirge; in the southeast, they are part of the Ammergebirge. At 2,082 metres, Hochplatte is the highest mountain in Ostallgäu. These details provide a broader landscape context than the local history of Oberostendorf.

Cultural destinations in Ostallgäu offer another distinct focus: since 12 July 2025, Neuschwanstein Castle, together with Linderhof Palace, the King’s House on Schachen, and Herrenchiemsee Palace, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visits to the two royal castles, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, are possible only as part of a guided tour. Bear this requirement in mind when planning a visit to the castles.

Cycling and hiking routes in the region

The Ostallgäu Cycling Region comprises regional routes that extend throughout Ostallgäu. Each is 25 to 76 kilometres long, consistently signposted, and has its own theme. For hiking, Ostallgäu has 32 local routes that showcase special treasures in nature and in the towns and villages. The descriptions provide different points of reference when choosing: the cycling routes specify their length and theme, while the hiking routes focus on discoveries in nature and local communities.

Forggensee: cycling route and seasonal boat trips

At more than 15 km², Forggensee is Bavaria’s fifth-largest lake and Germany’s largest reservoir. The Forggensee cycle route runs around the lake, while Forggensee boat trips operate regularly during the summer season. This offers two different ways to enjoy the lake: a cycling circuit and seasonal boat trips. If you are planning a boat trip, check the schedule for your travel dates.
