Ten information panels around the pond at the recreational complex explore the history of the Waldthurn region—from the Stone Age to the territorial reform. The Waldthurn History Trail gives this long sweep of time a clear focus. Other routes have their own distinct themes: the Nature and Culture Trail combines topics from nature, history and culture, while the Fahrenberg focuses on the history of pilgrimage and church art. Two questions can help you plan: Which topics would you like to explore in greater depth, and does a route with a stated distance in kilometers fit your day’s schedule?

The History Trail, Nature and Culture Trail, and Pilgrimage

The Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of Mary is located on the Fahrenberg above Waldthurn. The altarpiece on the left side altar depicts the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth. The history of the pilgrimage site also includes a tradition dating back to 1204: a member of a religious order is said to have brought a statue of the Virgin Mary from the Holy Land at that time. A chapel was built at a castle and the image of Mary was placed there for veneration; according to tradition, this marked the beginning of the pilgrimage to the Fahrenberg. The scene depicted and the origin story highlight two different aspects: the theme of the encounter and the traditional account of how the pilgrimage began.

The Nature and Culture Trail is a circular route around the market town of Waldthurn. Along the way, information panels provide details about nature, history and culture. There is a viewing tower on the trail, called a “Motte” because of its shape. By contrast, the History Trail, with its ten panels, focuses on the development of the Waldthurn region. The difference is useful when choosing a route: one offers a variety of themes along a circular walk, while the other follows a clearly defined historical arc.

Hiking Trails by Length and Starting Point

There are also two clearly measured circular routes to consider when planning a hike. The 10 km Kneipp Circular Trail starts at the recreational complex on the eastern edge of Waldthurn, on the road to Neuenhammer. It passes through forests and meadows; around the Fahrenberg, viewpoints offer views across the Upper Palatinate. The 10.5 km circular trail in the cross-country skiing area starts at the OWV Waldthurn ski hut; there is a car park on the road to Neuenhammer. The two distances differ by 500 meters. The different starting points therefore offer a more useful guide to choosing a route than the difference in length.

Cross-Country Skiing, Cycling and Museums

The Fahrenberg Cross-Country Skiing Center offers trails measuring 2, 4, 7 and 12 km, with difficulty levels ranging from easy to moderate. The starting point is the Waldthurn–Neuenhammer car park. The range therefore extends from the shortest to the longest of the listed routes. Check current conditions before planning a day of cross-country skiing. The Waldthurn cycling facility / pump track is located at Badeweiher 32 in Waldthurn.

The Potato Technology Museum is also one of Waldthurn’s three small museums. Its subject differs from the information panels on the History Trail and the church art on the Fahrenberg: its name alone points to potatoes and technology. Waldthurn thus brings together different cultural perspectives—from the history of the Waldthurn region and pilgrimage to a museum dedicated to a technical subject.
