Floß offers several options for a stay: the synagogue commemorates the former Jewish community, the district teaching garden combines a circular trail with a sensory labyrinth, and the town lies directly on the Bockl Cycle Route. The Doost nature reserve is also located within the market municipality. When choosing what to focus on during your stay, you can weigh up whether architectural history, gardens, cycling or nature is your priority.
Architectural history in three dates
The Floß Synagogue was built on Judenberg between 1815 and 1817. It commemorates the former Jewish community and is recognised as both a historic monument and a place of worship. The former Pflege Castle dates to 1671/73, while the pilgrimage church of St. Nicholas dates to 1722. These dates span the late 17th to the early 19th century. The synagogue also connects the town’s architectural history with the commemoration of the former Jewish community.
Garden paths and quiet reflection
The Floß district teaching garden offers a circular trail of approximately one kilometre alongside the Garden of the Senses. The garden also includes a sensory labyrinth in a spiral shape. At about one kilometre, the circular trail is a short route option; the spiral adds a sensory element of its own. Check current access arrangements before your visit, as visitor conditions may change.
The Findling Trail begins in Floß on the Bockl Cycle Route. Its twelve themed stations are designed for quiet reflection. The two trails therefore have different focuses: the district teaching garden centres on its circular trail and sensory labyrinth, while the Findling Trail features its themed stations.
The Bockl as a cycling and walking route
Floß lies directly on the Bockl Cycle Route. In the wider Neustadt an der Waldnaab destination, the Bockl stretches for 52 kilometres from Neustadt an der Waldnaab to Eslarn, following a historic railway line. The route can be travelled on foot, by bike or on inline skates. It is mostly paved and traffic-free, with gradients rarely exceeding three percent. Check for temporary diversions before setting off.
Rock formations along the Girnitz
The Doost nature reserve is located within the market municipality of Floß and covers approximately eleven hectares. Massive rock formations rise along about 500 metres of the Girnitz. The riverbank and rock formations give this nature experience a different focus from the circular trail in the district teaching garden. Check the nature reserve’s access regulations before visiting.
Cycling and regional refreshments
The regional Upper Palatinate Cycling World includes a visit to the Floß brewery and a taste of locally brewed beers. If you plan to include this culinary stop, check in advance which beers are available and how they are served. This adds a regional culinary experience to your cycling route, without making your stay solely about sights or routes.
Getting there and the wider region
The road route to the district teaching garden follows the A93, takes the Neustadt/WN exit and continues towards Floß. Before setting off, it is worth checking for roadworks, as the route may be temporarily changed.
The district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab is in the Upper Palatinate Forest destination. The district’s tourist offerings include hiking, cycling, museum visits and swimming in numerous bathing waters. This wider regional context complements Floß’s local attractions with a range of trip-planning options.
