Sugenheim brings together architectural history, museums and a landscape shaped by agriculture and viticulture. This gives you a choice of different themes when planning your trip: historic buildings from different periods and the “WeinWanderWelt” with circular hiking trails and valley cycling routes. If you would like to combine local history with time outdoors, you can explore these themes as separate highlights or mix them during your stay.

Castles with Different Building Phases

The Old Castle of Sugenheim is a former moated castle dating from the 14th century. It was first mentioned in 1376, destroyed in 1525 and rebuilt on the same site between 1525 and 1529. Its three-wing layout with four corner towers adds an architectural description to this sequence. The sequence divides its history into three phases: first mention, destruction and reconstruction.

The New Castle of Sugenheim dates from the 16th century. Around 1746/49, it was extended and given an outer casing in the Margrave style. Compared with the former moated castle and its four corner towers, it reflects a different building history: the later changes through an extension and outer casing are the focus here.

Church, Gate and Museums

St. Erhard’s Church was built in 1765/66 in what is known as the Margrave style. The church also contains epitaphs of its long-standing patrons. The Margrave style can therefore be seen in Sugenheim both at the church and on the outer casing of the New Castle; the dates point to different building phases.

The Deutenheim Gate dates from 1602. The former sheep barn now houses the local history museum. The Old Castle is also home to the Toy Museum, which Jan and Manuela Kube opened in 1988. The Toy Museum and the local history museum bring different museum themes together in Sugenheim’s cultural landscape.

Trails and Landscape

You can explore Sugenheim’s “WeinWanderWelt” on circular hiking trails and valley cycling routes. The two types of routes appeal to different interests: hiking is the focus on the circular trails, while the valley routes are for cycling. Your choice therefore mainly depends on whether you would prefer to get around on foot or by bike.

The landscape is shaped by agriculture and viticulture. Small, fragmented vineyard plots are nestled between orchards and hedgerows. Sugenheim’s rural character is therefore shaped by more than viticulture alone: agriculture, orchards and hedgerows are also part of it.

Culture in the wider destination of Neustadt a.d.Aisch

The wider destination of Neustadt a.d.Aisch has its own urban cultural focus. The museums in the Old Castle in Neustadt a.d.Aisch are housed in the former residence of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Kulmbach-Bayreuth. Guided tours of the old town and themed city tours are offered there by trained guides from the history and local heritage association; they share historical facts and anecdotes. Seasonal themed markets offer regional specialties such as asparagus, honey, wine and carp. If Neustadt a.d.Aisch is relevant to your plans, check the current market dates.
