A walk through Neuburg’s historic Old Town takes in, among other places, the Court Church and the historic hall of the Provincial Library. These stops bring different eras together: the Court Church of Our Lady combines Late Renaissance and Early Baroque styles, while the Provincial Library has a Baroque library hall dating from the 18th century.

Old Town, palace and Renaissance

Neuburg Residenzschloss is a Renaissance-style palace. Its construction history can be placed in context within the broader destination of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen: Count Palatine Ottheinrich had the significant Early Renaissance complex built between 1530 and 1545. The palace chapel is one of the oldest Protestant church buildings in the world and features frescoes by Hans Bocksberger from 1543.

The exhibitions also cover a range of subjects. “The Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg in the Palace” presents a collection of paintings documenting the 300-year history of the Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg. “Ecclesiastical Baroque in Neuburg Palace” focuses on church vestments and silk embroidery from the former Ursuline convent in Neuburg. Neuburg also displays 150 paintings from the Bavarian State Painting Collections’ collection of Flemish Baroque art.

Every two years, on the last weekend of June and the first weekend of July, the Neuburg Castle Festival brings the Renaissance to life again. Exact dates and the program vary from one edition to the next, so check the dates for the festival year you are interested in. To learn about the city’s history with a guide, you can choose from classic city tours, themed tours and museum visits. Guides take visitors through the centuries of the city’s history. The program may change, so it is worth checking the latest dates in advance.

The Old Town walk takes in, among other places, the Court Church and the historic hall of the Provincial Library. The walk can be booked individually through December 31, 2027. The two stops show how a walk can be experienced through specific buildings: sacred architecture at one, a Baroque library hall at the other.

On foot and by bike

A Kneipp water-treading pool lies along the Kneipp circular hiking trail and has been maintained and operated by the Neuburg Beautification Association for a long time. Confirm local conditions before your visit. The trail also leads to the Finkenstein viewpoint, which, at 440 meters, is the highest point on the hike.

For cycling, the Castles and Palaces Tour starts in Neuburg on the Danube and follows the Danube Cycle Path along the river toward Donauwörth. Route conditions may change. The broader destination of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen also offers a longer route: 63 kilometers of the Danube Cycle Path run through the district, from Donauwörth to Ingolstadt; temporary detours are possible. The local tour description and the regional information therefore differ mainly in their geographical scope.

Neuburg-Schrobenhausen as the wider region

In the broader destination of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, the landscape ranges from rock formations in the north, through the riparian forest along the Danube and the Donaumoos with its deep-black soil, to the asparagus fields of the Schrobenhausen region in the south. This regional range offers a different perspective from the individual architectural and walking-tour themes in Neuburg on the Danube. Schrobenhausen is known in the region for its distinctive Schrobenhausen asparagus.

The wetlands are also home to a variety of birds: the meadow-breeding areas in the Donaumoos and the Paar Valley are important habitats for the Eurasian curlew, northern lapwing, meadow pipit, corn bunting, whinchat, corncrake and common snipe. At Antoniberg, an impressive avenue of old lime trees leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Danube and the surrounding Danube floodplains. Antoniberg is protected in its entirety as a natural monument.

The “Durchblick” installation, built in 2015, stands on Antoniberg. It reveals the exact location of the 500-meter-long Danube bridge built by the Romans, remains of which have been found in the riverbed. Another architectural example in the broader destination is Grünau Hunting Lodge, considered a fine example of Early Renaissance architecture.

In the broader destination, district guides offer themed tours and individually arranged discovery trips. These include museum or church visits, guided nature hikes and cycling tours with a focus on nature. If you are planning one of these tours, check the official calendar in advance for dates and booking conditions.
