Hiking trails in Ehekirchen lead to views of the Donaumoos, follow streams and reach the forest. At the same time, churches and works of art in several districts tell of construction phases and styles from different centuries. If you want to explore the area on foot, you can choose from routes of very different lengths and discover a wide range of landscape and cultural details along the way.
Choose hiking routes by distance and landscape
The municipal hiking trails range from shorter loops to considerably longer routes. The Leitenbach Trail is 2.8 kilometres long, and the Ambach Loop is 3.17 kilometres. The Bucher Hiking Tour and the Baierner Flecken are each listed as 6.34 kilometres; the Around Ehekirchen route covers 7.28 kilometres, and the Gumppenberg Loop 8.85 kilometres. Longer routes are Lorenzi-Donaumoos at 14.2 kilometres and the Streichholz Loop at 15.2 kilometres. It is the longest loop in the Ehekirchen hiking programme. These figures make it easy to compare route lengths, without implying that the trails have similar destinations.
The Baierner Flecken starts and ends at the community centre in Hollenbach. Along the way, you cross the Längenmühlbach; the final section along the dam then leads to the forest. The route also reaches a flood retention basin, where you can observe many birds, water buffalo and a large herd of Murnau-Werdenfels cattle. If you want to focus on nature watching and the transition between water, dam and forest, you will find several specific stops along this same hiking route.
Views of the Donaumoos and trails near Illdorf
The Ambach Loop offers views across the vast expanses of the Donaumoos. In a Föhn wind, the Alpine ridge can be seen to the south. The longer Around Ehekirchen route also links different landscapes: it goes around the main village and offers views of the Donaumoos, the Alps and the surrounding hill country. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by their described views: on one, visibility of the Alpine ridge depends on a Föhn wind; on the other, the Donaumoos, the Alps and the hill country are all mentioned as sights.
On the Leitenbach Trail near Bonsal, a slope covered with hedgerows shapes the route as far as Illdorf’s eastern boundary. A detour leads across flower-rich, protected dry slopes above Illdorf. The Lorenzi-Donaumoos route has a different landscape focus: it links the open expanses of the upper Donaumoos with the wooded Aindling terrace escarpments and offers long-distance views to the east and south. Thus, the Leitenbach Trail highlights the slope and protected dry slopes, while Lorenzi-Donaumoos brings together open moorland, wooded terraces and far-reaching views.
Churches and works of art in the districts
The history of the buildings can also be traced through specific dates. The new parish church in Ehekirchen was solemnly consecrated on 25 August 1896 by diocesan bishop Petrus v. Hötzl, with 26 clergy in attendance. In Hollenbach, the parish church preserves the tower of a larger 15th-century church building. Its nave was renewed several times and renovated and given a Baroque interior in 1720. The two churches thus represent different construction periods and developments: the consecration of the new parish church in the late 19th century and the preserved older building fabric, later remodelled, in Hollenbach.
The church in Bonsal contains two historical sculptures: “The Death of Mary,” dating from around 1480, and the valuable “Lamentation of Christ,” created around 1500. The church in Buch was built around 1500; its nave was extended in 1787. Ambach’s building history goes back even further: its church was built in 1450, ravaged by the Swedes during the Thirty Years’ War and rebuilt around 1690. Another named landmark, the Kaisereiche, also known as the Friedenseiche, was planted in Ehekirchen in 1871. These dates make it possible to place the churches and works of art in chronological context without merging their distinct histories into a single building history.
Route information for planning
For navigation, the municipality provides route maps as PDFs as well as GPX files for smartphones with a GPS-enabled app. The regional tourism portal also lists the “Ehekirchen Hiking Trails Flyer” as a downloadable hiking map or flyer. When choosing a route, you can first compare the distances and then the features described—for example, the flood retention basin and forest on the Baierner Flecken, the views from the Ambach Loop or the dry slopes along the Leitenbach Trail.
