At Munich Airport, there is more to see than air traffic alone: Visitors’ Hill and the observation terrace offer different views, the environmental cycling route provides a focus of its own, and Airbräu adds brewing culture and Bavarian cuisine to your visit. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you mainly want to watch aircraft movements, ride a cycling route or learn about brewing.
Airport operations from different perspectives
The 28-metre-high Visitors’ Hill offers views of the runways, departing and landing aircraft, and activity on the apron. From the observation terrace, you can also see the apron and the runways; it additionally offers a view of the satellite building. This extra viewpoint can help you choose between the viewing options if you specifically want to include the satellite building.
If you want more than just to watch and would like a behind-the-scenes look at airport operations, the Airport Live Tour offers this opportunity. It also provides a close-up view of large aircraft and activity on the apron. The tour lasts approximately 60 minutes, plus the security check. As tour offerings and operational details may change, check the latest tour information before your visit.
Cycling and getting to know the surrounding area
The environmental cycling route is a loop of approximately 19 kilometres. It runs along Nordallee, the aprons and the southern runway. The route is mostly on gravel and paved roads. When planning, you can use the approximate loop distance and the stated surface as specific points of reference.
At various stops along the environmental cycling route, signs with QR codes link to background information on the airport website. This means you can also explore the loop through the information provided at the stops. The meadows around the runways are part of the “Northern Erdinger Moos” Special Protection Area for Birds. This protected-area designation is therefore another aspect of the surroundings, alongside the airport grounds.
Airbräu and other attractions in the Visitors’ Park
Since 1999, Airbräu has brewed beer directly at Munich Airport in accordance with the German Purity Law. The restaurant serves Bavarian specialities and freshly brewed beer in a traditional pub atmosphere. On the brewery tour, you can learn how the beer is brewed from four ingredients; the tour takes you from the copper brewing kettles to the lager cellars. The restaurant and the tour offer different experiences: the focus here is on food and beer, and there on the ingredients and stages of brewing.
The Visitors’ Park’s themed playground features a large tower slide. Also in the park is a redesigned 18-hole course that combines leisure fun with forward-looking ideas. These attractions add more ways to spend your time in the Visitors’ Park alongside the viewpoints and the tour.
Getting there and planning your time
The Visitors’ Park is accessible via the “Besucherpark” stop on S-Bahn lines S1 and S8. If you plan to visit the park, you can use this stop as a reference point for your journey.
The tour and cycling route are described differently for planning purposes: the Airport Live Tour is listed as lasting approximately 60 minutes, plus the security check. The environmental cycling route, on the other hand, is described by its approximate length of 19 kilometres and its predominantly gravel and paved surface. This lets you allow for the extra time needed for the security check when planning the tour, and assess the cycling route by its distance and surface.
