Hohenbrunn lies in a clearing surrounded by a belt of protected forest. At the same time, the town is located between Munich and the Bavarian Oberland, with lakes and local mountains nearby. During your stay, you can focus on nature and local history as two distinct themes: the Hohenbrunn circular hiking trail leads through the forest, while St. Stephen’s Church and the historical records offer insights into the community. Hohenbrunn is divided into several districts.

Getting There and Getting Around

S-Bahn and bus services connect Hohenbrunn with Munich and surrounding communities. The municipality assigns certain districts to different stations: Riemerling to Ottobrunn station, Hohenbrunn Dorf and the Grasbrunner Weg settlement to Hohenbrunn station, and the Luitpoldsiedlung to Wächterhof station. This distinction is useful when planning routes within Hohenbrunn or trips to the surrounding area; the town’s name alone does not tell you which station serves your destination. Before setting out, check current timetables and plan your route to suit your accommodation and intended destinations.

Circular Hiking Trail Through the Forest

The Hohenbrunn circular hiking trail is a family-friendly nature trail that winds through the forest along well-marked paths. It is designed for families, children, hikers and cyclists; its description combines enjoying nature with exercise and learning through play. There are 23 interactive stations along the way, offering information about the forest and inviting visitors to take part. The stations give the walk an educational focus, combining learning with exercise. The short loop is about 4.5 kilometres long, and the longer one is 8.5 kilometres. You can choose your route according to the distance you prefer; these details may change if the trail is modified.

Local History and Architecture

Historical written references to Hohenbrunn date from 780 and 814; 814 is considered the year the community was founded. The village church of St. Stephen’s also offers a tangible link to the town’s history: it is Late Gothic, and its tower was given a Baroque onion dome in 1680. The building thus brings together a Late Gothic church style and a later Baroque tower design. Visitors interested in architecture can view these features as evidence of different historical periods without needing a comprehensive local history.

MUNA: Plan Access in Advance

MUNA extends across Hohenbrunn and Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn. The 180-hectare military site contains 120 above-ground bunkers. Access is an important consideration when planning a visit: the area is normally fenced off and closed to the public. Guided tours are offered on selected days. If you plan to visit, check the dates and access arrangements in advance.

Indoor Pool and Café in Riemerling

The Riemerling indoor pool is open to the public. Opening periods and temporary closures may change, so check current notices before planning your visit. Café O.K. at the Riemerling sports campus and indoor pool offers guests a small selection of food and drinks. Its offerings and operating arrangements may also change.
