Klostersee, Kallmuth and Homburg Paper Mill offer different ways to experience Triefenstein’s water, geology and industrial history. When choosing where to stay, it’s worth deciding what matters most to you first: should the lake be the focus of your trip, are you interested in the history of the monastery, or would you like to combine cultural landscapes and walking routes? The area’s themes offer different options without requiring you to follow a fixed itinerary.
Water at Klostersee
Klostersee in Trennfeld was created by gravel extraction between 1972 and 1975. Its surface area is about 76,000 square metres, its shoreline about 1,700 metres long, and its depth up to five metres. These dimensions give the lake a clear profile as a destination for a day out. A specific restriction applies to the part of the lake on the left when viewed from the bathing lawn: this section is used by the Trennfeld Fishing Association, and swimming and boats are prohibited there. This rule applies only to that particular section; check local regulations before your visit.
Geology and history
In Triefenstein-Homburg, Kallmuth rises above the Bunter sandstone as a limestone cliff. This geological feature offers a different focus from the lake. Triefenstein Monastery was founded in 1102 and served as an Augustinian monastery for canons for more than 700 years. Homburg Paper Mill offers a further glimpse into history: it was restored with public funding from 1994 to 1997 and classified as a cultural and industrial heritage site unique in Bavaria.
Inaugurated in September 2012, Cultural Trail 2 runs along the left bank of the Main from Lengfurt via the quarry, cement works, Kallmuth and Homburg, returning to its starting point at the Main quay in Lengfurt. Its route thus connects geological and industrial landmarks with the history of the towns. If you’d like to explore culture and landscape together, the contrast between natural formations, monastic history and industry offers a common thread for choosing what to explore.

Triefenstein in Main-Spessart
The wider travel destination of Main-Spessart offers a broader regional perspective. The Main Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometres long; nearly 100 kilometres of it run through the Main-Spessart district, connecting Karlstadt, GemĂĽnden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. Two circular routes of the European Cultural Trail pass through Triefenstein and provide information about nature and culture. They complement the local cultural themes with a regional perspective.
The landscape of the wider Main-Spessart travel destination is also shaped by vineyards, water and forest. In Spessart Nature Park, hiking ranges from short walks to multi-day tours. You can decide whether Triefenstein itself will be the main focus of your stay or whether to include other nature and cultural attractions in Main-Spessart.
