Retzstadt brings together vineyard landscapes, trails and local history. The town lies in a side valley of the Main and is surrounded by vineyard slopes. Visitors can choose from different highlights for their stay, including the scenery, wine tradition and historic buildings.

Hiking between Retz and the Vineyards

Known as the “Village of Trails,” Retzstadt offers hiking excursions for day visitors, hikers and cyclists. The “Wine and Nature” circular trail starts right in Retzstadt, follows the Retz and reaches a vineyard on the Altenberg. It is a specific hike that starts in town and links trails with vineyard scenery. Check current route information before setting out.

The two references to wine lead to different excursion options: “Wine and Nature” is the circular trail that starts in Retzstadt and follows the Retz to a vineyard on the Altenberg. A regional cycling tour, by contrast, passes the Retzstadter Langenberg vineyard site.

Buildings from Different Centuries

The Baroque parish church of St. Andrew was built between 1726 and 1730. The Chapel of the Cross was built above a lower chapel dating to around 1250. The half-timbered house of the Lothar von Hoeren family dates from 1556 and has a medieval vaulted cellar. There is also an agricultural museum at the Paul-May estate.

The local heritage spans church architecture and an older chapel, half-timbering and agriculture. The buildings offer different historical perspectives; the lower chapel’s date remains approximate, while specific years are given for St. Andrew’s and the half-timbered house.

Wine as a Local Tradition

Wine is considered Retzstadt’s most important local product. Grapes have been harvested in Retzstadt for more than 1,000 years. Together with the vineyard slopes and the trails mentioned above, viticulture is a distinctive part of the town’s character.

Getting Here by Train

Retzstadt has no direct rail connection. You can travel by train via Retzbach-Zellingen station on the Würzburg–Frankfurt line. Check current connections and timetables before travelling to plan your journey.

Main-Spessart on a Regional Scale

In the wider Main-Spessart destination, the Main Hiking Trail offers a broader hiking perspective: it is around 500 kilometres long, with just under 100 kilometres running through the Main-Spessart district and connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. This is a regional-scale option alongside the circular trail that starts directly in Retzstadt.

The stage of the ZweiUferPanoramaweg also offers a distinctive view of the Main-Spessart landscape. It includes orchards, ridges, vineyards and river landscapes. Other natural features mentioned include shell limestone and Main-Franconian dry grasslands, as well as diverse flora and fauna. This makes it possible to distinguish Retzstadt’s local vineyard landscape from the broader landscape themes of the wider destination.
