Maierhöfen offers a range of ways to spend a getaway: cycling routes lead to or through the town, in winter you can use ski lifts and cross-country ski trails, and themed trails range from natural and cultural landscapes to reflection stations.
Cycling Routes and Winter Sports
The Allgäu Cycling Loop leads to Maierhöfen; the Allgäu Cheese Route cycling route passes through the town. In winter, skiers and cross-country skiers can use the Flucken and Iberg ski lifts as well as the extensive network of cross-country ski trails in Maierhöfen. This brings together different options: lift facilities for skiers and trails for cross-country skiers. If winter sports are a deciding factor for your trip, check local operating conditions in advance.
Trails with Different Themes
The Kugel-Alp Trail features 18 family-friendly discovery stations about the natural and cultural landscape and the people who live and work there. Traditional alpine farming is one of its main themes. The trail also has a wildlife observation station about forest birds and mammals, as well as several balancing and play features. The stations therefore combine nature themes with insights into the cultural landscape and local life.
The Hengelesweiher Loop offers a different impression of the landscape: it starts at the Ibergzentrum and runs past the sports ground, meadows and forest towards Hengelesweiher and its species-rich nature reserve. When choosing a route, the described sequence of open meadows and forest sections, ending at the pond, is a useful guide.
The Reflection Trail starts on the path to the labyrinth. Four stations focus on the themes “Setting Out,” “Breath,” “Silence” and “Source of Strength.” This gives the trail a different focus from the discovery stations on the Kugel-Alp Trail. The Kugelrundweg Maierhöfen leads to the Kugel, the highest point in Westallgäu. Choosing a trail lets you decide between nature observation, themed stations and a route to this high point.
The Nearby Eistobel Gorge
The Eistobel nature reserve, about 3.5 kilometers long, lies near Maierhöfen. Cliffs up to 130 meters high frame it, and the Obere Argen cascades down through several tiers of terrain. The Eistobel provides a habitat for species including white-throated dippers, blue-winged damselflies and common ravens, as well as mosses, ferns and horsetails.
A well-secured hiking trail leads through the gorge, with three circular route options to choose from. The hiking trails in the Eistobel are closed in winter. This sets the routes there apart from the winter skiing and cross-country skiing options in Maierhöfen, making the season an important factor in your planning.
An Autumn Tradition
In autumn, during the Viehscheid, the cows are driven from the mountain pastures down to the village of Maierhöfen. The Viehscheid is a recurring autumn tradition. If it is important for your travel dates, check the specific date in advance.
There are several seasonal reasons to choose one travel period over another: winter sports, hikes in the Eistobel outside its winter closure, and the Viehscheid in autumn. When searching for hotels in Maierhöfen, choose according to what matters most for your stay.
