Cycling and hiking in Theres

The Main Cycle Route runs directly through the municipality of Theres. From Obertheres, a family-friendly cycling loop also follows the Main. You can hike along the Wässernach; part of the route is also part of the Franconian Marian Trail. This gives you several options when choosing a tour: a long-distance cycle route through the municipality, a cycling loop starting in a specific district, and a hiking trail along the Wässernach. The cycling loop is described as family-friendly, while the hiking trail has its own thematic connection through its partial inclusion in the Franconian Marian Trail.

Church history and art in Untertheres

The church in Untertheres was built on the site of an older church during the term of Abbot Gregor Fuchs (1715–1755). Its history thus connects two phases of construction at the same location. West of Untertheres, right beside the Main Valley Cycle Route, there is a Calvary group attributed to the Franconian sculptor Johann Peter Wagner. The church and the Calvary group offer different points of interest: one focuses on the site of the older church, the other on the attribution of a work of art and its direct connection to the cycle route.

Hiking trails in the broader Haßberge destination

The broader Haßberge destination offers other types of hiking tours. The adventure tours in Haßberge Nature Park are half-day or full-day outings and follow circular routes back to the starting point. The “Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail” passes through the natural surroundings of the German Castle Corner. The 190-kilometre Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail also runs through the German Castle Corner. Extending even farther is the 254-kilometre Celtic Adventure Trail, which leads from the Werra via the Gleichberge and the Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund. Duration, distance and circular-route format offer different points of comparison when planning hikes in the Haßberge area.

Landscape and culture in Haßberge

Haßberge Nature Park is a gently rolling low-mountain region of extensive mixed forests, fields and meadows, historic vineyards and varied landscapes. The Schwedenschanze observation tower crowns a 487-metre-high summit of the Haßberg ridge. From there, the view extends over mixed forest to the Grabfeld, as well as to the distant heights of the Rhön in the northwest and Thuringia in the north. The Schwedenschanze is also a ring-wall fortification dating from the Hallstatt period.

The railway museum in Hofheim station explores the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. Booking is required for the interior spaces; visits are by appointment at 0 95 23 / 13 05. Arrange your visit before you arrive. The Altenstein Castle Information Centre features an armoury with medieval knight’s armour and weapons, as well as a fictional excavation site with an adjoining research laboratory.

Regional specialities and wine are also among the things to discover in the broader Haßberge destination. Fatschenbrunn is known for making “Hutzeln”: pears are dried there into dried fruit according to an old tradition. A hike through the Abt-Degen wine valley can be combined with Franconian wine at numerous hedge taverns and wine taverns. As individual venues may change, check in advance which ones are currently open.
